Some films come with an inspiring true story, and ‘The Salt Path’ was certainly one of those releases. Starring Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs, the film adapts Raynor Winn’s memoir, which chronicles a couple’s journey along England’s south coast after losing their home.

The film exceeded expectations following its UK debut, garnering positive reviews and impressive box office results for what initially seemed like a modest indie drama. However, behind the scenes, a very different narrative was unfolding just as the film’s biggest opportunity was about to arise.

Anderson has now disclosed that Sony withdrew from a deal to distribute ‘The Salt Path’ in the United States after a scandal emerged regarding alleged fabrications in Winn’s supposedly true account. “The story came out the week we were signing U.S. distribution and Sony withdrew,” Anderson stated in an interview with Variety.

The controversy originated from a report by the UK’s Observer newspaper, which claimed that significant aspects of the Winns’ story had been misrepresented. This included allegations involving embezzled funds related to their home loss and doubts surrounding Moth’s terminal diagnosis. Both the memoir and the film were marketed as true stories, making these allegations particularly damaging to the project’s credibility.

Anderson expressed that the timing was especially painful given the film’s unexpected success. “We had been so surprised by its success: ‘What, really, this film about two old people going on a walk?’ It felt like such a betrayal because we’d spent time with [the Winns],” she remarked, again speaking to Variety.

The Winns have consistently disputed the allegations since they first emerged, asserting that the essence of their story remains intact. Despite the controversy, Anderson seemed to empathize with the couple’s situation, acknowledging the unsettling nature of facing such public scrutiny.

‘The Salt Path’ initially premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before its release in UK cinemas, where it became one of 2025’s more successful British independent films. Anderson portrayed Raynor Winn, with Isaacs playing her husband Moth, while the screenplay was adapted from Winn’s memoir by Rebecca Lenkiewicz and directed by Marianne Elliott.

Even without Sony’s support, the film eventually reached American audiences, receiving a limited theatrical release in the U.S. through a different distributor after the Sony deal fell through. The rollout was significantly smaller than originally planned, contrasting sharply with the momentum the film had built in the UK prior to the scandal.

For Anderson, the aftermath of this fallout seems to remain a sore subject, even long after the film’s initial release cycle concluded. Her remarks indicate that the lost distribution deal represents one of the more frustrating chapters in an otherwise successful production, especially considering the time the cast spent getting to know the real individuals behind the story.

As discussions about the memoir’s accuracy continue, ‘The Salt Path’ stands as a significant example of how quickly a true story controversy can alter a film’s commercial trajectory. Regardless of the truth behind the Winns’ journey, the movie’s path to American theaters turned out to be far from what its cast and filmmakers had originally envisioned.
