‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ Festival Premiere Set for NYC Before Theatrical Release
Franchise sequels typically don’t receive the kind of prestigious treatment usually reserved for award contenders, but ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ is an exception. This kaiju follow-up is generating significant buzz on the festival circuit, especially after its predecessor achieved a historic Oscar win.
Anticipation for this sequel has been steadily rising since its predecessor became a cultural phenomenon, transforming a modestly budgeted genre film into one of the most celebrated blockbusters of its time. Now, fans have an official date to mark on their calendars.
Film at Lincoln Center has announced that Takashi Yamazaki’s ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ will have its world premiere as the Spotlight Gala selection of the 64th New York Film Festival, scheduled for September 26 at Alice Tully Hall. This screening will occur over a month before GKIDS releases the film theatrically in the United States on November 6, offering festival audiences an exclusive first look at Yamazaki’s follow-up.
‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ is a direct sequel to 2023’s ‘Godzilla Minus One,’ continuing the story in 1949, two years after the original film’s events. It follows the Shikishima family as they confront a new calamity. According to the festival’s synopsis, this installment promises even more impressive effects choreography while maintaining its post-WWII Japan setting grounded in human experiences.
Yamazaki, along with members of the film’s cast and crew, is expected to attend the New York premiere. NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim praised the director’s vision for the franchise, stating, “More than 70 years after the first Godzilla movie, Takashi Yamazaki continues to prove that there’s life in the old franchise yet, returning to its postwar roots to locate a haunting, primal terror. Like its predecessor, ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ is a throwback blockbuster, showcasing human drama and innovative craft, and we are excited to have its world premiere as this year’s NYFF Spotlight Gala.”
The original ‘Godzilla Minus One’ became a major success following its 2023 release, grossing over $100 million worldwide against a relatively modest budget, approximately ten times its production costs. Its success led to a strong awards run, further enhanced by a black-and-white re-release titled ‘Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color,’ which extended the film’s theatrical life beyond its initial run.
This awards trajectory culminated in a historic moment for Yamazaki at the 2024 Oscars, where he became the first director since Stanley Kubrick to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Reflecting on this achievement, he told TheWrap, “To have my name next to Stanley Kubrick, no matter how niche or specific the list is, it means so much.”
It’s important to note that this Toho-produced Japanese franchise operates independently from Legendary’s American Monsterverse iteration, meaning fans should not expect any crossover with that ongoing series, which has its own next installment, ‘Godzilla x Kong,’ set for 2027.
‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ will be part of a robust NYFF64 lineup that includes James Gray’s ‘Paper Tiger’ as the festival’s Opening Night selection, Tony Gilroy’s ‘Behemoth!’ as its Centerpiece film, and Ava DuVernay’s documentary ’14th’ closing out the festival. With the 64th New York Film Festival taking place from September 25 through October 12, kaiju fans now have a specific date to circle for their first glimpse of Godzilla’s latest adventure.
