‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Confirms NYFF Audience Reactions
Kaiju films have always thrived on spectacle, yet only a select few manage to combine giant monster destruction with genuine emotional depth. Three years ago, one such film succeeded brilliantly, transforming a genre often viewed as mere popcorn entertainment into a legitimate awards contender.
That film was ‘Godzilla Minus One,’ the 2023 sequel that became a global phenomenon and won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Its remarkable success set a daunting standard for the next installment in the franchise.
Now, that highly anticipated follow-up has officially arrived, and early indicators suggest it may have surpassed expectations. ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ premiered at the New York Film Festival with an impressive 94% score from critics based on an initial 16 reviews, accompanied by a synopsis hinting that “there is no third time” and that “everything ends here.”
Director Takashi Yamazaki returns to helm the sequel, which unfolds two years after the events of ‘Godzilla Minus One.’ The narrative once again centers on the Shikishima family, with a reluctant Kōichi drawn back into the fray as a new monstrous threat compels humanity to consider using Godzilla as a weapon against an even greater peril.
Notably, ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ has received an R rating for violent content and graphic imagery, marking the first time in the franchise’s 72-year history that a film has carried such a rating. Yamazaki addressed this decision at the film’s world premiere, clarifying that opting for a more restrictive rating wasn’t the obvious commercial choice.
“Logically, as a studio — and even as a director — you want as many people from the general public to be able to see your film,” he explained to Variety at the premiere, adding that censoring the action simply wasn’t feasible for the story he aimed to tell.

The screening itself became an event in Alice Tully Hall, with the audience erupting into applause multiple times during the kaiju action. Yamazaki also entertained the crowd by sharing his initial nerves when Toho executives began inquiring about a sequel almost immediately after viewing the first cut of ‘Minus One.’
Social media reactions from the festival have been overwhelmingly positive, with numerous critics and journalists favorably comparing the sequel to genre classics like ‘Terminator 2’ and ‘The Dark Knight’ for how it builds upon its predecessor. Some even suggested that the film’s ambition and emotional depth could position it for major awards consideration.

Much of the acclaim has focused on the film’s central monster battle, which features Godzilla facing off against King Ghidorah in what reviewers describe as more than just a typical creature clash. One review specifically noted that the sequence captures the same fairy-tale intensity that made the destruction scenes in ‘Minus One’ feel less like standard blockbuster chaos and more like a profound national reckoning.
‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ is also significant from a technical perspective, being the first Japanese production ever Filmed For IMAX. The film was shot using high-definition digital cameras certified by IMAX, a detail that is expected to enhance its theatrical release, especially for fans eager to experience the kaiju action on the grandest scale possible.
The film is set to open in Japan on November 3, coinciding with the anniversary of the original 1954 ‘Godzilla’ release, before making its way to North American theaters on November 6. Given the enthusiastic reception from its festival premiere, expectations for its box office performance are already soaring.
With its critical acclaim, historic rating, and a marketing campaign centered on IMAX spectacle, ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ appears poised to be one of the standout theatrical events of the fall season. Whether it can replicate its predecessor’s awards success remains to be seen, but early buzz indicates that Yamazaki has crafted a sequel worthy of the anticipation.
