Halle Berry’s Daughter Defends Her Amid Custody Battle Allegations
Family court disputes often become public spectacles, especially when they involve celebrities. The ongoing custody battle between Halle Berry and her ex-husband Olivier Martinez has escalated significantly. The former couple, who tied the knot in France in 2013, has been embroiled in a lengthy fight over their son, Maceo, and the situation has recently intensified.
In early October, Martinez sought a temporary restraining order and sole custody from a Los Angeles court, claiming that Berry physically abused their son. A judge granted the temporary order on October 1, but reports clarify that this does not confirm the validity of his allegations. A hearing is set for October 16.
Amid this turmoil, Berry’s daughter, Nahla Aubry, has stepped forward with a unique perspective. In a court declaration, she defended her mother, portraying Berry as a loving and dedicated parent who can be strict but has never physically harmed her younger half-brother.
Nahla, whose father is Berry’s former partner Gabriel Aubry, filed her declaration in Los Angeles Superior Court on October 3. She stated that she has never witnessed Berry hitting, grabbing, or otherwise physically harming Maceo, describing the allegations as completely inconsistent with the mother she knows. Nahla recalled moments of playful wrestling between Berry and Maceo, noting that her brother never appeared hurt afterward.
She also mentioned that Berry has always encouraged both of her children to maintain loving relationships with their fathers. Expressing her heartbreak for Maceo, Nahla described him as being caught in a dispute he may not fully comprehend. She also conveyed feelings of being overlooked by Martinez and referenced a past incident involving him and her father, although this claim has not been independently verified.
Despite having different fathers, Nahla and Maceo have spent most of their lives together with their mother. Recently, Nahla moved to Massachusetts for her studies, but she emphasized that Berry has always prioritized what matters most and treated Maceo with the same care. Her statement reflects her personal experience of Berry’s parenting style, though it does not resolve the specifics of the contested incident.
Martinez alleges that during an incident on September 26, Berry became upset while Maceo was playing a virtual reality game, jumped on him, and placed her hands around his neck. He claims this was not an isolated incident and has referenced previous alleged occurrences, along with text messages Berry sent him afterward. Following the allegations, Berry’s contact with Maceo has been limited to court-ordered visitation until the upcoming hearing.
These accusations remain unproven, and Berry firmly disputes them. In her own declaration filed on October 5, she denied ever harming her son, explaining that they were merely roughhousing, as they often do, when he became upset after realizing she was recording. She provided video evidence that she claims contradicts her ex-husband’s narrative and described herself as a victim of domestic violence who also supports others.
Berry’s attorney, Marina Beck, labeled the filing as meritless and misleading. Furthermore, Berry has requested to reinstate their previous 50/50 custody arrangement, arguing that Martinez is unable to provide appropriate guidance for their child. Reports indicate that both parents have been ordered to participate in confidential custody mediation.
The case is still in its early stages, and the temporary restraining order is intended to protect individuals while the court assesses the facts. Each filing is significant, including testimonies from family members who have observed daily life in the household. While a sibling’s account will not determine the outcome, it provides additional context for the judge to consider.
This situation illustrates how quickly a private custody dispute can involve an entire family. Although Nahla is not a direct party to the case, she chose to share her experiences publicly. For an audience closely following the developments, her words offer a rare insight into Berry’s home life.
Much remains to be resolved, and the next hearing is expected to provide further clarity. Until then, the conflicting narratives coexist, with a young child at the heart of the matter.
