Bel Powley has made it clear that her love for ‘Harry Potter’ does not equate to agreement with everything its creator, J.K. Rowling, has expressed regarding gender issues.

Powley, who portrays Petunia Dursley in HBO’s upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ TV series, discussed Rowling’s views in a recent interview with The Telegraph. The actress emphasized her strong disagreement with Rowling while also sharing her reasons for wanting to be part of the new adaptation.

“I strongly disagree with J.K. Rowling’s views on gender. I think that the trans community deserve safety and dignity and respect and total acceptance,” Powley stated in her interview with The Telegraph.

Her remarks come as the new ‘Harry Potter’ cast faces inquiries about their involvement in a series associated with Rowling. The author is serving as an executive producer for the HBO adaptation, and her views on transgender issues have sparked significant controversy in recent years.

For Powley, the choice to join the show was also a personal one. She grew up immersed in the ‘Harry Potter’ books, which she described as a pivotal part of her childhood.

“But I love ‘Harry Potter.’ I grew up with the books. I am from that first generation of readers and, again, I love magic and spookiness,” she remarked.

This complex sentiment appears to resonate with some of her fellow cast members. The new series has already prompted several actors to address Rowling and their comfort level with participating in a project linked to her.

John Lithgow, who plays Albus Dumbledore, has also tackled the topic. In an interview with The New Yorker Radio Hour earlier this year, Lithgow mentioned he contemplated stepping away from the role due to Rowling’s views.

Ultimately, he chose to remain involved. “The reasons to do it were much, much stronger than the reasons to protest against what Rowling has done and said,” Lithgow explained.

He also expressed disagreement with many of Rowling’s positions, noting that some of her statements have been “twisted and misrepresented,” while acknowledging that Rowling continues to uphold her views.

The new ‘Harry Potter’ series stands as one of HBO’s most anticipated projects. It is set to premiere at Christmas and will retell the story from the beginning, allowing for a more expansive adaptation across multiple seasons.

Dominic McLaughlin will take on the role of Harry Potter, with Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. The cast also features Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Hagrid, and Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall. Mark Mylod is directing, while Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner.

The show has already been renewed for a second season, which will focus on ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.’

As the premiere approaches, the cast will likely continue to encounter questions regarding Rowling. Powley’s remarks illustrate that, for her, there is a distinct difference between supporting the beloved ‘Harry Potter’ story of her youth and endorsing views she fundamentally disagrees with.
