‘Lanterns‘ has generated significant buzz as one of the most anticipated additions to James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe, drawing early comparisons to acclaimed crime dramas like ‘True Detective’ instead of typical cosmic superhero narratives. This grounded approach proved successful when the series premiered on Sunday, delivering a detective story rich in small-town intrigue, featuring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.

The premiere concluded with a shocking twist that left viewers stunned, reframing everything that had just unfolded. With seven episodes remaining in the season, fans were left questioning how the series could possibly recover from such a dramatic opening.

HBO addressed this on Monday, August 17, by releasing a new “This Season On” trailer that provides the clearest insight into the direction of the upcoming episodes. According to AOL, the footage showcases rising tension between Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they confront a growing threat in Rushville, with Jordan revealing that a newly discovered entity is aware of its exposure.

The looming threat revolves around a hidden Manhunter that the Lanterns must locate within a tight 48-hour timeframe, significantly raising the stakes compared to the more grounded murder mystery that characterized the show’s opening chapter. Throughout the trailer, the partnership between Jordan and Stewart shows signs of strain, with Jordan asserting that no one will take his ring while he’s alive, while Stewart grapples with whether his mentor is still worthy of his trust as others urge him to abandon the mission.

The trailer continues the trend set by earlier promotional material, which has gradually introduced more of the DCU’s Green Lantern lore with each release. Previous trailers confirmed the involvement of Sinestro, portrayed by Ulrich Thomsen, alongside the Manhunters, a shapeshifting faction with a long, violent history against the Green Lantern Corps in the comics.

The Manhunters were created by Steve Englehart and Dick Dillin, first appearing in the comics in 1977, and have historically been among the Corps’ most formidable foes. Their early introduction in the series opens the door for future storylines involving other emotional-spectrum Lantern Corps, although such expansions may not occur within this first season, which seems more focused on establishing the threat than fully resolving it.

‘Lanterns’ airs new episodes every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO, with simultaneous streaming on HBO Max, continuing through the season finale on October 4. The show is co-created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, with Mundy serving as the showrunner for all eight episodes.

As the season’s central mystery expands beyond its initial murder investigation, ‘Lanterns’ seems committed to escalating the stakes with each episode rather than settling into a slower, more procedural pace. With the Manhunter threat and the unraveling partnership at its core, the series has set up ample tension to carry through the remainder of its eight-episode run.
