The new HBO Harry Potter series has started filming in France, specifically on the Île de Sein off the coast of Brittany. This location is being used to recreate the scene where Hagrid tells Harry, “You’re a wizard, Harry.”

In the books, this event takes place in a hut on a rock off the coast of Cornwall, England. The choice of a French island has surprised some fans and crew members, who expected a more traditional British setting.

The filming on Île de Sein occurred between May 19 and May 24, 2025. The crew is using the island’s rugged landscape and the nearby Tévennec lighthouse to stand in for the remote hut.

Some believe the island’s mystical history, including legends of druid princesses who could transform into animals, influenced the decision to film there.

The series features a new cast, with Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Nick Frost will play Hagrid, John Lithgow is cast as Albus Dumbledore, and Paul Whitehouse will portray Argus Filch.

Filming is set to continue at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire, UK, starting in summer 2025.

While some fans are concerned about the departure from traditional British locations, the production team aims to bring a fresh perspective to the beloved series.

The new adaptation plans to stay true to J.K. Rowling’s books while introducing new elements to captivate audiences.
