Brad Pitt has consistently reinvented himself with each new project, and his latest film takes him far from his usual roles. In ‘Heart of the Beast’, the actor is stripped down to the essentials: one man, one dog, and the harsh Alaskan wilderness that separates them.

This shift in direction could have faltered in less skilled hands, especially with director David Ayer, known for gritty urban narratives rather than tender survival tales. However, early reactions indicated that both audiences and critics were pleasantly surprised by how the film diverged from expectations.

The verdict from opening night audiences is in, and it’s overwhelmingly positive. ‘Heart of the Beast’ received an A- CinemaScore following its release on September 25, as reported by Exhibitor Relations, reflecting the emotional connection the film has made with viewers on its first night in theaters.

This positive reception aligns with the critical consensus that has been forming in the days leading up to the film’s release. ‘Heart of the Beast’ debuted with a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes, later stabilizing around 91%, making it the best-reviewed film of Ayer’s career and placing it among the top-rated films in Pitt’s filmography, just behind ‘Moneyball’ at 94% and ‘True Romance’ at 93%.

The story follows James Belmont, a retired Special Forces officer portrayed by Pitt, who finds himself stranded in the Alaskan wilderness with his combat dog Odin after a devastating plane crash. What may seem like a straightforward survival thriller has been described by critics as an unexpected love story.

Variety’s Owen Gleiberman praised Pitt’s performance as authentic and understated, while also highlighting Uber, the dog actor playing Odin, for delivering some of the year’s most impactful performances. The Hollywood Reporter echoed this sentiment, noting that despite its rugged premise, the film carries an emotional depth reminiscent of classic family films, centered on the bond between Pitt’s character and his canine companion.

Deadline’s Pete Hammond humorously suggested that Odin’s performance deserves award recognition, stating, “As for Odin, has any dog ever won an Oscar? Lassie, Benji, anyone? Well, it’s high time. Odin delivers one of the best performances by an actor this year, hands down.”

For Ayer, whose recent works have leaned toward darker themes with films like ‘The Beekeeper’ and ‘Suicide Squad’, ‘Heart of the Beast’ signifies a significant tonal shift that is paying off. The 91% Rotten Tomatoes score marks the best-reviewed film of his career by a considerable margin.

While the critical acclaim hasn’t yet translated into blockbuster box office numbers, tracking services estimate a domestic opening weekend between 14 million and 20 million dollars against an 82 million dollar production budget. Nonetheless, this range would place the film in a solid, profitable position, allowing it to gain momentum as the fall box office clears.

With strong reviews, a rare A- CinemaScore, and growing word-of-mouth surrounding Odin’s standout performance, ‘Heart of the Beast’ is poised to be one of the more quietly successful releases of the season. For Pitt, this film demonstrates that stepping outside his comfort zone can lead to some of the most acclaimed work of his career.
