Hideo Kojima has expressed his thoughts on ‘Supergirl’ after viewing the new DC movie in IMAX, and his reaction is garnering significant attention online.

The creator of Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding frequently shares brief reviews of films on social media. While not a professional film critic, many fans value his opinions due to his reputation for cinematic storytelling in video games. This time, Kojima offered more than just a simple “I watched it,” which many of his followers interpret as a positive sign.

In his post on X, Kojima revealed that ‘Supergirl’ surprised him, as it was not the typical superhero movie he anticipated.

“I saw ‘Supergirl’ in IMAX. It wasn’t a ‘superhero movie’ about saving the Earth through self-sacrifice as ‘justice’ confronts ‘evil.’ It was a coming-of-age story about saving oneself, Kara, as she struggles with her own trauma.”

Rather than concentrating on action and the usual hero-villain conflict, Kojima felt the film was more focused on Kara’s personal journey. He noted that the narrative centers on the character grappling with her emotional pain while discovering her identity.

Kojima also drew comparisons between the movie’s storytelling and classic films. He mentioned that ‘Supergirl’ reminded him less of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ and more of Sergio Leone’s iconic western ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.’

“Structurally, it feels less like ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ (2015), where everyone is driven purely by survival instinct beyond notions of good and evil, and more like ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ (1966), where heroes, villains, and scoundrels all converge.”

His remarks indicate that he appreciated the film’s character development rather than adhering to a straightforward good-versus-evil narrative.

Kojima’s posts on social media are typically brief, but long-time followers believe the length of his comments often conveys a lot. When he enjoys a film, he tends to write a few sentences about what resonated with him. Conversely, if a movie fails to leave a mark, he usually only mentions that he watched it.

This is why many fans interpret his comments on ‘Supergirl’ as a favorable reaction, even if he did not praise the film as highly as he did with ‘Superman’ last year. His earlier remarks about ‘Superman’ were more enthusiastic, indicating a deeper connection with that film.

Kojima’s reaction comes at a time when ‘Supergirl’ has received mixed reviews from critics. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently holds a 57 percent critics score. While this is not among DC’s lowest-rated films, it falls short of the 83 percent achieved by ‘Superman’ in 2025.

Audience reactions have been more favorable, with the film currently holding a 76 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter, indicating that many viewers enjoyed it more than professional critics.

The movie is also facing challenges at the box office, with early weekend estimates suggesting ‘Supergirl’ is projected to earn between $62 million and $77 million worldwide during its opening weekend. Given that the film reportedly cost around $170 million to produce before marketing expenses, this is not the start Warner Bros. likely anticipated.

Nevertheless, Kojima’s comments highlight that ‘Supergirl’ has at least one admirer who valued its emphasis on Kara’s personal narrative rather than simply delivering another conventional superhero tale.
