‘House of the Dragon‘ has spent three seasons building toward a pivotal moment that fans have eagerly awaited since the prequel series debuted: Rhaenyra Targaryen finally accepting the role of prophesied savior, reminiscent of her infamous descendant, Daenerys Targaryen. This connection became undeniable following the Season 3 finale.

In the finale, Rhaenyra orders the execution of the High Septon after he refuses to recognize her rule. She then addresses the common folk in High Valyrian, proclaiming herself the “Prince That Was Promised” and positioning her cause as their only hope against a looming existential threat. This moment drew immediate parallels to Daenerys’s own self-righteous victory speech in the ‘Game of Thrones‘ series finale, just before her notorious descent into tyranny.

Showrunner Ryan Condal has now tackled this connection directly, confirming in an interview that the prophecy was never meant to refer to Rhaenyra. According to Condal, Rhaenyra is not the chosen one, and if the true “Prince That Was Promised” exists, that figure is approximately two centuries away, pointing to either Jon Snow or Daenerys Targaryen, depending on the interpretation of the prophecy. Rhaenyra and her husband Daemon were unaware of this at the time.

This clarification traces back to a moment in the Season 2 finale when Daemon has a vision of his family’s future, which includes Daenerys holding her three baby dragons. He mistakenly conflates this figure with his own wife on the Iron Throne. Both Rhaenyra and Daemon subsequently use this vision to justify the increasingly brutal measures Rhaenyra takes to reclaim her father’s throne.

Condal emphasized that these parallels were intentional. He explained that the connections between the two eras are significant because they remind viewers that these periods of Westerosi history are closely intertwined, with Daenerys’s desperate quest for a crown centuries later being a direct consequence of the events in Rhaenyra’s narrative.

During a finale press conference, Condal reiterated the comparison, welcoming viewers to draw parallels between the two series. He noted that echoes and reflections across both stories are inevitable, some intentional and others more subliminal. He linked this connection to a broader theme that runs throughout the franchise: the impact of the Iron Throne’s pursuit on those ensnared in its influence.

Despite these thematic overlaps, Condal was careful to differentiate between the two queens. He pointed out that Daenerys only reached the Iron Throne at the end of her story, after devastating King’s Landing, while Rhaenyra’s journey unfolds in reverse, showcasing her struggle to maintain power.

With ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 4 confirmed as the show’s concluding season, Condal’s remarks indicate that the series will continue to delve into Rhaenyra’s gradual unraveling rather than retreating from the darker path she is now firmly on. Given how closely the finale tied her rhetoric to Daenerys’s own fall from grace, fans should anticipate this parallel to deepen as the endgame approaches.

In a franchise built on cyclical tragedy and inherited ambition, confirming that the real “Prince That Was Promised” lies centuries ahead only reinforces the sense of doom surrounding Rhaenyra’s current trajectory.
