Inde Navarrette Makes Late-Night Debut on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Promoting ‘Obsession’
The rising star of horror, Inde Navarrette, made her late-night television debut recently. The breakout talent from the hit film ‘Obsession’ graced the stage of ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ on June 5, marking a significant milestone in her rapidly growing career in genre cinema.
Navarrette joined fellow guest Johnny Knoxville to promote ‘Obsession’ in front of a national audience. This episode aired in a rare Friday night slot due to ABC’s schedule adjustments for Game 2 of the NBA Finals. At just 25 years old, Navarrette is riding a wave of success that few could have anticipated just months ago.
Directed by Curry Barker, ‘Obsession’ was filmed in a mere 20 days on a budget of around $750,000. Despite its modest budget, the film has received a remarkable 95% critics score and a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Additionally, it earned an A-minus CinemaScore from viewers, an impressive achievement for the horror genre, which often sees lower exit poll grades due to its unsettling themes.
‘Obsession’ opened on May 15, debuting at number three at the box office with an impressive $17.2 million. It then made history by holding the top weekday spot from Monday through Wednesday, becoming the least expensive film to lead the midweek box office in years. Over Memorial Day weekend, the film surged to $23.9 million over three days, a record-breaking increase that made it the only title in Focus Features history to expand its theater count heading into a third weekend. By the time Navarrette appeared with Kimmel, the film had already surpassed $148 million globally against its micro budget.
In ‘Obsession’, Navarrette portrays Nikki, a woman who becomes the unwitting subject of a supernatural wish made by her coworker Bear, played by Michael Johnston. The consequences of this wish take a dark turn, and critics have praised her fearless, physically committed performance as the driving force behind the film’s success. Many have hailed her as a breakout star, placing her firmly in the realm of scream queens.
Prior to her role in ‘Obsession’, Navarrette gained recognition on television through her performances in ’13 Reasons Why’ and ‘Superman & Lois’, where she portrayed Sarah Cushing across multiple seasons on The CW.
Navarrette expressed her desire for audiences to connect with her character, hoping they would feel what Nikki experiences. She also shared her excitement about remaining in the horror genre, stating that she plans to stick around if the genre continues to welcome her.
During her Kimmel appearance, Navarrette discussed her sudden rise to fame and her adventurous spirit, including her experience with skydiving. With producers already planning to collaborate with her on the upcoming rollercoaster thriller ‘Invertigo’, it’s clear that Hollywood is eager to keep this moment alive. Her late-night debut felt more like a celebration of her achievements than just a promotional appearance.
