‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ Rotten Tomatoes Score Shows Horror Franchise Thrives
Horror franchises often struggle to maintain their appeal by the sixth installment, yet the ‘Insidious’ universe continues to find innovative angles more than a decade after James Wan and Leigh Whannell first opened the door to The Further. This success can be attributed to a rotating lineup of directors who bring their unique perspectives while keeping series mainstay Lin Shaye at the forefront.
In this latest chapter, the directorial reins have been handed to Jacob Chase, known for 2020’s ‘Come Play.’ He both wrote and directed this new installment, which is based on a concept he developed with ‘The Conjuring 2’ writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. The film shifts focus to a new family, moving away from the Lambert clan that featured in the first five films.
Critically, this gamble appears to be paying off. ‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ has debuted with a 67% score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the second-highest-rated entry in the franchise, just behind the original 2010 film.
The story centers on Gemma, portrayed by Amelia Eve, a young mother raising her daughter in her childhood home. Gemma discovers her ability to travel into The Further, the purgatorial realm central to the franchise’s mythology, and realizes she has a rare gift: the power to bring whatever lurks there back into the real world.
This intriguing twist has sparked varied reactions from critics. IGN described it as “a better soft reboot than a sixth franchise entry has any right to be,” commending the film for delivering “a popcorn-rattling ride full of fun, creative scares.” In contrast, other reviews have been less favorable, with IndieWire labeling it “direly, dreadfully boring.”

Polygon provided a more balanced critique, suggesting that the film “works best when it focuses on the generational tale of mothers and what they pass down to their daughters,” while acknowledging that some emotional depth can get lost amid the chaos. This generational theme has become a hallmark of this new chapter, setting it apart from earlier sequels that relied more heavily on jump scares than emotional stakes.
Critics have also highlighted the film’s craftsmanship as a standout feature, regardless of their opinions on the storyline. In its review, The Wrap praised the sound design as one of the film’s “secret weapons,” even while noting that the screenplay relies on some predictable elements given the franchise’s extensive history.
Historically, the original ‘Insidious’ has been recognized as the franchise’s best-reviewed film, followed by ‘Insidious: Chapter 3.’ The more recent entries, including ‘Insidious: The Red Door,’ ‘Insidious: Chapter 2,’ and ‘Insidious: The Last Key,’ rank lower. The fact that the latest installment has surpassed nearly the entire back catalog indicates the positive reception of Chase’s reboot approach among critics.
Lin Shaye’s ongoing role as Elise Rainier remains a consistent thread connecting the franchise, even as the character roster evolves. Wan and Whannell, who directed and co-wrote earlier entries, have transitioned to producer roles for this installment, a trend that has become increasingly common as the series hands creative control to a new generation of horror filmmakers.
‘Insidious: Out of the Further’ is set to hit theaters on August 21, offering genre enthusiasts a fresh scare just as the fall horror season begins to unfold. Given the mixed reviews so far, audience reactions during the opening weekend will likely influence whether the film’s critical standing remains stable or shifts as more reviews come in.
For a franchise that many believed had exhausted its narrative potential after five entries, demonstrating that there are still new terrors to explore within The Further is a significant achievement. Whether this reboot direction will serve as a model for future ‘Insidious’ films is yet to be determined, but critics seem cautiously optimistic that the series still has plenty of ideas left to explore.
