Is Thanos Coming Back to the MCU? Josh Brolin’s Comments Spark Speculation
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is once again reflecting on its past as it gears up for its next chapter, with the Russo Brothers set to direct both ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ This nostalgic approach has fans buzzing about which familiar characters might return.
Few names resonate as strongly in this discussion as Thanos. Josh Brolin’s portrayal of the Mad Titan was central to the franchise’s most significant storyline, first appearing in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ before becoming the main antagonist in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ where his character ultimately met his demise.
This history is why Brolin’s recent comments have ignited a new wave of speculation. While promoting his latest project ‘The Dog Stars,’ Brolin was directly asked if Thanos could return to the MCU. Instead of dismissing the idea, he provided an answer that kept the possibility alive.
“I don’t know how to answer that question,” Brolin stated, before expanding on Thanos’s perspective. He told Collider that he has started to question whether the villain’s rationale for eliminating half the universe to save the other half was entirely misguided, especially in light of current global issues.
This ambiguous response feels less like a denial and more like an actor carefully sidestepping a spoiler. Brolin has previously embraced a similar ambiguity when discussing Thanos’s potential future in the franchise.
In 2024, Brolin mentioned to Collider that returning to the role would need to feel justified rather than forced, comparing it to his decision to reprise his role in the ‘Sicario’ sequel. He indicated that he would ultimately follow whatever direction the Russo Brothers provided, suggesting that his reluctance is more about narrative coherence than a desire to avoid donning the purple suit again.
Adding complexity to the situation is the fact that Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom has been positioned as the MCU’s next significant antagonist leading into ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’ This casting decision has sparked considerable debate over whether there is even room for Thanos to return to the forefront, or if any appearance would need to be in a smaller, unexpected capacity.
Brolin has continued to voice Thanos in animated form in Disney+’s ‘What If…?’ series, keeping the character alive in the multiverse even after his live-action demise. Given the MCU’s flexible multiverse rules, the return of a variant version of Thanos for a cameo or a more substantial role remains a distinct possibility.
News of Brolin’s latest comments quickly spread across social media, with one widely shared post summarizing the exchange garnering tens of thousands of views within hours. Fans eagerly dissected every word of his response, interpreting the actor’s hesitance as a sign that something may indeed be in the works.
For now, Marvel Studios has not confirmed any details regarding Thanos’s role in either upcoming Avengers film, leaving Brolin’s cryptic remarks as the closest hint fans have. Whether this is a deliberate tease or simply an actor being cautious with his words, it’s evident that the Mad Titan remains a significant part of the MCU dialogue.
