James Gunn is undoubtedly one of the busiest figures in Hollywood today. As co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, he manages the entire DC Universe slate while also writing and directing its major films. Reports indicate that he is working 18-hour days to oversee the Superman sequel.

The sequel, ‘Man of Tomorrow’, has completed principal photography after 93 shooting days, with Gunn sharing crew photos on Threads to mark the occasion. This film is the fourth installment in the DCU and serves as a follow-up to 2025’s ‘Superman’. It is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027, leaving approximately nine months for post-production and visual effects.

The cast is impressive, featuring David Corenswet reprising his role as Superman, alongside Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Edi Gathegi, and Skyler Gisondo. Newcomer Lars Eidinger will portray Brainiac, while Milly Alcock returns as Supergirl, and Adria Arjona joins as Maxima. Gunn has teased that the narrative will see Lex and Superman teaming up against a much larger threat.

You might think Gunn would take a breather once filming wraps.

In a recent Threads exchange, a fan inquired if he was ready to start writing his next film. Gunn responded affirmatively, indicating he was already working on it, as he needed something to occupy his time while awaiting the assembly. The assembly refers to the initial rough cut of a film, suggesting that Gunn is using the downtime on ‘Man of Tomorrow’ to begin drafting a new script.

Gunn did not specify which project he is currently writing, and DC Film News concluded its post by asking fans for their guesses. The DCU slate provides some hints but no definitive answers. DC Studios has ‘The Authority’ and ‘The Brave and the Bold’ on its list without release dates, along with other projects in development.

The slate is already quite full. ‘Supergirl’ was released in June, and ‘Clayface’ is set to follow on October 23. ‘Lanterns’ will conclude its first season tonight on HBO. Following ‘Man of Tomorrow’, Gunn has confirmed that the animated ‘The People v. Gorilla Grodd’ will be the second DCU release in continuity, with ‘Creature Commandos’ season 2 not far behind.

On the other side of DC, ‘The Batman: Part II’ is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027, just three months after ‘Man of Tomorrow’. Gunn has also mentioned that he is supporting the crew of Batman 2 to ensure a smooth production.

This isn’t a new trend for Gunn. Back in mid-2025, he mentioned he was pre-writing his next DC Studios project while managing post-production on ‘Superman’ and ‘Peacemaker’. By August 2025, he had completed the treatment for the next chapter in what he refers to as the Superman Saga.

Additionally, he wrote the entirety of ‘Peacemaker’ season 2 while serving as co-CEO. This strategy allows DC Studios to keep its release calendar on track, as scripts are ready before filming begins.

This approach is crucial for the DCU, which needs to maintain momentum. One analysis described ‘Man of Tomorrow’ as a bellwether for the franchise, especially after what was termed a divisive start. The film is also being positioned as the DCU’s first crossover event and a stepping stone toward the Justice League.
