Good news for horror fans—Happy Death Day 3 is finally happening! Actress Jessica Rothe and director Christopher Landon have confirmed that the third movie in the popular horror series is now moving forward.

The Happy Death Day series began in 2017 with the first film, directed by Christopher Landon and written by Scott Lobdell. The movie stars Jessica Rothe as Tree Gelbman, a college student who is killed on her birthday, but instead of staying dead, she wakes up and relives the same day over and over again.

Tree must solve the mystery of her murder and find out who is trying to kill her before it happens again.

The film was a mix of slasher horror and comedy, and it quickly became a hit. It was made on a small budget of just $4.8 million but went on to make over $125 million worldwide. Jason Blum, known for his low-budget horror hits, produced the movie through his company, Blumhouse Productions.

Thanks to the success of the first film, a sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, was released on February 13, 2019. The second movie continued Tree’s story and added a sci-fi twist, exploring alternate dimensions and timelines.

After the second film didn’t make as much money as expected at the box office, the future of a third movie became uncertain. In early interviews, Landon said he already had an idea for the third film, and Jason Blum said they wanted to make it, but only if there was enough interest from fans.

By July 2019, Landon said the movie wasn’t in development yet, but he had written an outline and hoped to share the story one day in some way.

In 2020, both Blum and Landon gave fans new hope. Blum said that while other studios might have canceled a third film after the sequel’s lower earnings, he still believed in it and was working hard to make it happen.

Later that year, Landon confirmed that the third movie—tentatively titled Happy Death Day to Us—was in active development, and Jessica Rothe would return as Tree. He also said that the script outline was ready and just waiting for approval from Universal Pictures.

In 2023, Landon shared in an interview that he had officially pitched the third movie. And now, in 2025, it looks like it’s finally a go. Both Jessica Rothe and Christopher Landon have confirmed that Happy Death Day 3 is moving forward.

Fans of the series can now look forward to seeing Tree’s story continue—possibly with more twists, time loops, and new surprises. With the original team back on board, there’s no doubt that Happy Death Day 3 will bring another fun, scary, and smart ride.
