Universal is in the process of reassembling one of the most cherished adventure franchises from the late ’90s and early 2000s, and each new casting announcement has sent fans spiraling into nostalgia. What began as a simple confirmation of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz’s return has evolved into a full reunion of the original 1999 cast.

The excitement has only intensified with every new reveal, including John Hannah reprising his role as the lovable Jonathan Carnahan, along with reports that Oded Fehr and Kevin J. O’Connor will return as Ardeth Bay and Beni Gabor. However, one character has been on fans’ minds more than any other—a villain whose fate seemed sealed after his fiery demise at the end of ‘The Mummy Returns’.

Arnold Vosloo is officially returning as Imhotep in ‘The Mummy 4’, as confirmed by John Hannah at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival 2026. While Hannah did not elaborate on how Imhotep will fit into the plot, his statement leaves no doubt that Vosloo is back to reprise the iconic role that defined the franchise’s villainy across two films.

The confirmation comes shortly after Universal announced the returns of Oded Fehr as Medjai warrior Ardeth Bay and Kevin J. O’Connor as the cunning treasure hunter Beni Gabor, both of whom faced dramatic fates in the original trilogy. Beni’s apparent death, trapped in an ancient tomb and consumed by scarab beetles, seemed as final as Imhotep’s, yet the franchise has always embraced themes of resurrection to bring characters back from the dead.

This pattern lends a certain narrative logic to Vosloo’s return, as Imhotep himself was resurrected once before in ‘The Mummy Returns’ after dying at the end of the original 1999 film. Fans quickly picked up on this connection when O’Connor’s casting was announced, with one social media user commenting, “So this definitely confirms Imhotep is returning since John Hannah said Kevin and Arnold Vosloo is in talks.” Another fan even inquired whether Patricia Velasquez, who portrayed Imhotep’s ill-fated love interest Anck-Su-Namun, might also be returning.

The sequel is being directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence and is scheduled to hit theaters on October 15, 2027. The film is reportedly set to ignore the events of 2008’s ‘The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor’, effectively resetting the franchise to the tone and continuity of the beloved original trilogy. This creative decision is likely a key reason why fans have reacted so positively to each returning character.

In addition to the core group of returning stars, the cast also includes newcomer Michael Johnston and franchise veteran John Hannah, with Numan Acar joining as a new addition. While details about the sequel’s plot remain closely guarded, the return of both Imhotep and Beni suggests that the film aims to delve deeply into the mythology and character dynamics that endeared the original films to audiences.

With nearly the entire principal cast of the 1999 film now confirmed to return in some capacity, ‘The Mummy 4’ is shaping up to be one of the most complete legacy sequels in recent memory.
