Anime enthusiasts have been discussing how Netflix should manage one of its most ambitious adaptations, and it seems the platform has finally taken note. ‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run‘ made its debut earlier this year with a single-episode release that left many fans eager for more, only to encounter an uncertain wait for the continuation of the story.

That uncertainty is about to come to an end. The wait for new chapters featuring Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli’s cross-country race is nearing its conclusion, as the show’s second wave of episodes is set to arrive with a release model designed to avoid the issues that plagued previous installments in the franchise.

The 2nd and 3rd Stages of ‘Steel Ball Run’ will premiere on Netflix worldwide on September 25, featuring 11 episodes released weekly every Friday under the hashtag #JOJOFRIDAY. This shift away from the fragmented, single-episode rollout used during the Spring premiere represents a strategic change aimed at addressing the complaints that followed ‘Stone Ocean’s’ similarly staggered release.

Set in 1890s America, ‘Steel Ball Run’ follows Johnny Joestar, a talented jockey now paralyzed from the waist down, as he partners with outlaw Gyro Zeppeli in a cross-continental horse race with a $50 million prize. The 2nd Stage thrusts the duo into a challenging 750-mile desert crossing, including the notorious “Devil’s Palm” region, significantly raising the stakes of the race.

Directors Yasuhiro Kimura and Hideya Takahashi return to lead the adaptation, with much of the production team from previous ‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’ seasons continuing in this installment. The English dub features Daman Mills as Johnny Joestar, Kaiji Tang as Gyro Zeppeli, Damien Haas as Diego Brando, and Frankie Kevich as Lucy Steel, while new Japanese voice actors include Tomoaki Maeno as Mountain Tim, Tomokazu Sugita as Funny Valentine, and Yoko Hikasa as Hot Pants.

The new pacing reflects a conscious production decision rather than a scheduling mishap. Producer Noriko Dohi has explained that the horse race sequences central to the narrative required additional time to perfect, stating that the races “need to feel really real and that’s incredibly difficult,” according to ComicBook.com.

This rationale aligns with the recent trend in ‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’ seasons, where staggered releases have become common as studios juggle ambitious animation with realistic production timelines. Instead of rushing episodes to maintain a continuous schedule, the team behind ‘Steel Ball Run’ chose to slow down and ensure the horse-racing sequences meet the high standards that longtime fans expect.

‘Steel Ball Run’ holds a distinct position within Hirohiko Araki’s long-running manga franchise, serving as a fresh start for the ‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’ universe while still carrying forward the Joestar family legacy and the series’ iconic Stand-based powers. Its transition to a Wild West-inspired American setting, combined with its horse-racing theme, sets it apart tonally from earlier arcs in the franchise.

Episodes will continue to feature both English and Japanese audio tracks, maintaining the bilingual approach used for the premiere. With leaks indicating that the full adaptation could ultimately encompass around 42 or 43 episodes over several years, this batch of episodes represents just one chapter in what promises to be a lengthy and ambitious endeavor for the franchise.

For a fanbase that has already spent years anticipating a proper ‘Steel Ball Run’ anime, the transition to a consistent weekly format should significantly enhance what has otherwise been a rocky rollout. It indicates that Netflix and the production team are prioritizing the storytelling experience over rigid release schedules, even if it means asking viewers to wait a bit longer between episodes.

With the countdown now in single digits and #JOJOFRIDAY set to become a weekly tradition, all eyes are on whether the 2nd Stage can deliver on the tension and excitement that the Devil’s Palm crossing promises.
