The upcoming chapter of ‘The Mandalorian’ was initially intended as a television series. In an interview with Collider, Jon Favreau revealed that Season 4 of the Disney+ show was meant to further explore Din Djarin and Grogu’s adventures.

However, that original plan never progressed to production.

Favreau shared that he had completed a full version of Season 4 prior to the production halt caused by the Hollywood strikes. Following this break, Lucasfilm shifted the project’s direction, opting to transform the television season into a theatrical film.

He stated, “The priorities changed from what I had written as a Season 4, before the work stoppage, and that was pushed to the side, and a new script had to be come up with.”

This alteration resulted in a new narrative structure. Instead of being released as a series of episodes, the next chapter for Din Djarin and Grogu will now be a standalone feature film titled ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’. This film is crafted to provide a theatrical experience rather than a streaming series.

Favreau explained that the creative team had to reconsider how the story would translate to film. The aim was to ensure it was accessible to viewers who might not be familiar with the previous episodes.

He remarked, “We came up with the new script for this together, so it has a different feel than a season of television, which acknowledges that you’ve seen all three coming before. This one, we wanted this to be an understandable enough standalone experience, so that if a fan wants to bring somebody who may not be as familiar, they’ll still have a good time.”

Despite the format change, the story remains intertwined with the broader Star Wars universe. Favreau noted that while the film connects to earlier events, it is designed so that new audiences can easily follow along without needing extensive background knowledge.

He also discussed the close ties between this project and the wider Star Wars narrative, particularly with concurrent shows like ‘Ahsoka’. He explained that ideas often overlap and influence one another during production.

Favreau emphasized the importance of ongoing communication with Dave Filoni, who is involved in multiple Star Wars projects. This collaboration helps maintain storytelling consistency across films and series.

While the format has evolved, the core concept remains intact. ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ will continue their journey in a galaxy grappling with the aftermath of past conflicts, including the fall of Mandalore and the remnants of the Empire.

Filoni also highlighted that the film is crafted to be an entry point for new viewers. He mentioned that while familiar characters from earlier Star Wars projects may appear, the narrative is designed to avoid feeling like homework for audiences.

The film is structured to allow returning fans to recognize connections, while new viewers can follow the story without needing to grasp every detail from previous series.

‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ is set to premiere in theaters on May 22, marking the first Star Wars film release in several years.
