Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas Reunite on the Dance Floor and ‘Save the Last Dance’ Fans Are Thrilled
Some movie romances simply endure. ‘Save the Last Dance’ is one of those films that continues to evoke a mix of nostalgia and playful banter, thanks to its Chicago backdrop, the blend of hip-hop and ballet, and a Juilliard audition scene that fans can recite by heart. So when Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas reunited, the internet took notice immediately.
Their reunion occurred during Stiles’ participation in the 35th season of ‘Dancing with the Stars’. A photo of the two co-stars together has been circulating widely, landing with a warm, nostalgic impact for anyone who grew up with the film.
Stiles has had a humorous relationship with her iconic dance role. ‘Save the Last Dance’ premiered in January 2001, following the story of Sara Johnson, a ballerina who relocates to Chicago after her mother’s passing and gets drawn into hip-hop dancing by a classmate named Derek, portrayed by Thomas. Kerry Washington also starred as Chenille.
When Stiles joined the ‘Dancing with the Stars’ cast this season, the film became a recurring joke. She has previously clarified that she did not perform some of the film’s more intricate dance moves herself, including the chair choreography, despite training hard for the role. Additionally, she never actually attended Juilliard, which led to a playful apology from the school and another from Andy Cohen, who had joked about her dancing last year.

On Tuesday night, Stiles and her professional partner, Ezra Sosa, performed a jazz routine to Jennifer Lopez’s ‘Jenny from the Block’. The choreography was a direct homage to the Juilliard audition scene in the film, complete with a prop chair. It was a clear nod to the movie that catapulted her to fame.
Then came the surprise. Thomas appeared in the wings behind Sosa, smiling and dancing along, later expressing his excitement to be there to support her. He shared that they had a fantastic time making the film and that she brought it all back that night. The duo earned a score of 33 out of 40 from the judges, placing them 4th for the evening.
The image of Stiles and Thomas together afterward sent fans into a frenzy. Many described the moment as exactly what they had been longing for, with numerous viewers admitting they teared up at the reunion. For a generation that grew up with the film, seeing Sara and Derek back together after a quarter of a century felt like a cultural milestone.
Thomas also shared a tribute on Instagram, praising his old friend’s performance and calling it an unforgettable night. The warmth between them has been evident over the years, and that goodwill clearly shone through on camera.
This isn’t the first time the cast has rallied around her. When Stiles was announced as part of the ‘Dancing with the Stars’ lineup on ‘Good Morning America’ in September, Washington and Thomas sent a congratulatory video message. Thomas humorously noted that he had a front-row seat the last time she faced a similar challenge, and since she got into Juilliard in the film, he was confident she would excel.
Their friendship has been apparent for years. In 2021, the two stars reunited virtually to celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary, each expressing pride in their connection to it. Stiles has also mentioned her pride in how the movie addressed issues of prejudice and race, helping to broaden her understanding of her own privilege.
Naturally, this reunion has reignited discussions about the possibility of a sequel. Stiles has previously suggested a scenario where Sara and Derek bump into each other at a grocery store, navigating their adult lives. Thomas told E! that he finds it hard to envision a plausible continuation, noting that an easy reunion can feel too simplistic.
A second film, ‘Save the Last Dance 2’, was released in 2006 as a direct-to-DVD offering without Stiles, meaning the original duo has never officially reprised their roles. For now, the most satisfying sequel fans have is this memorable dance floor moment.
The beauty of this reunion lies in its authenticity. Stiles transformed a running joke about her dancing into a heartfelt tribute, while Thomas showed up to support her without making a fuss. It’s the kind of nostalgic crossover that reminds audiences why a teen movie can resonate for decades.
