The family expressed gratitude to the medical staff who cared for Neill during his final moments, mentioning that further details would be shared later and requesting privacy during this difficult time.

Neill was a highly respected figure in the acting community of New Zealand and Australia, with a career spanning over five decades. While many fans fondly remember him as Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s iconic 1993 film Jurassic Park, his extensive career included a variety of films and television series.

He also starred in the acclaimed series Peaky Blinders, portraying Chief Inspector Chester Campbell, and garnered recognition for his performances in independent films and dramas. Throughout his illustrious career, Neill received several Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy nominations.

Born Nigel John Dermot Neill in 1947 in Omagh, Northern Ireland, he relocated to New Zealand with his family during his childhood. After starting his acting career, he moved to Australia in the late 1970s in pursuit of greater opportunities.

His breakthrough role came in 1979 when he gained international acclaim for his performance in My Brilliant Career, directed by Gillian Armstrong and featuring Judy Davis. The film’s success helped introduce Neill to audiences beyond Australia and New Zealand.

Over the years, Neill became known for his calm demeanor, versatility, and ability to portray a wide range of characters, from dramatic roles to action heroes. In 2022, he was honored with a knighthood as a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his significant contributions to acting and the arts.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to Neill following the announcement of his death, praising the actor’s profound influence on the country’s entertainment landscape. Albanese remarked that Neill had played a role “in so many beloved Australian stories and he earned a special place in Australian hearts.”

Earlier this year, Neill candidly discussed his health challenges in his memoir Did I Ever Tell You This? and revealed that he had been diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer. Fortunately, he later announced that he was cancer-free after undergoing treatment through Australian clinical trials.

Despite facing health challenges, Neill remained active in the entertainment industry. His passing marks the loss of an actor whose work resonated with generations of movie fans worldwide. From thrilling dinosaur adventures to intimate character-driven narratives, Sam Neill leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished.
