At just 20 years old, filmmaker Kane Parsons is on the verge of making history in Hollywood with his upcoming film ‘Backrooms.’ This information comes from industry box office forecasts and production reports that track early revenue predictions for major movie releases.

The film, produced by A24, is set to hit theaters on May 29. Early estimates suggest it could earn between 25 and 33 million dollars in its opening weekend in North America alone. Earlier predictions were slightly lower, around 20 million dollars. Even the lower range would be considered a strong result for a film with a budget of around 10 million dollars.

If ‘Backrooms’ reaches the top of the box office in its opening weekend, Kane Parsons could become one of the youngest filmmakers ever to achieve that milestone. Some reports indicate he could even be the youngest director to have a number one film on debut weekend, depending on final rankings and competition at the time of release.

The film is based on Parsons’ viral internet project from YouTube, where he first created the ‘Backrooms’ series under the channel Kane Pixels. The concept originates from the popular creepypasta internet story about an endless, strange, empty space that feels both familiar and unsettling. His short videos gained significant attention online and eventually led to a full Hollywood production.

The movie marks Parsons’ feature-length directorial debut and is written by Will Soodik. It is produced by major companies including A24, Chernin Entertainment, Atomic Monster, and 21 Laps Entertainment. Notable producers such as James Wan and Shawn Levy are also involved in the project, highlighting the scale of the production despite its relatively modest budget.

The cast features Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell. Ejiofor portrays Clark, a furniture store owner and failed architect, while Reinsve plays Dr. Mary Kline, a therapist searching for her missing patient. The narrative follows her journey into a strange alternate dimension in search of answers.

Production for the film began in July 2025 in Vancouver, Canada, under the working title ‘Effigy.’ Filming concluded in August 2025. Reports from production indicate that large physical sets were constructed to represent the ‘Backrooms’ world, covering tens of thousands of square feet. Some crew members even noted that the set was so expansive that people occasionally got lost while filming.

This project showcases how Parsons transitioned from online creator to Hollywood director in a remarkably short time. He began uploading his ‘Backrooms’ videos in 2022, and within a year, the idea was picked up for a full film adaptation. This rapid progression is one of the reasons the movie has garnered significant attention from both fans and the film industry.

If the box office predictions hold true, ‘Backrooms’ could emerge as a breakout hit for A24 and a significant career milestone for Parsons. Even if it opens at the lower end of forecasts, it would still be regarded as a strong performance for a debut director working with a modest budget.

As the release date approaches, anticipation is building around whether the film can meet expectations and potentially set a new record for a young filmmaker in modern cinema.
