Kathleen Kennedy Shares Updates On Future Star Wars Films
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy recently sat down for an extensive interview to discuss her departure from the company and the state of the franchise. She confirmed that Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan will succeed her as the new leaders of the studio. During this conversation, she offered clarity on several projects that have been in development for years. Her comments revealed a mix of progress and pauses for various highly anticipated titles.
One of the most significant updates concerns the new trilogy being developed by Simon Kinberg. Kennedy stated that this project is currently the most active and structured among the upcoming slate. Kinberg initially submitted a draft last August that required further work. He has since written a detailed seventy-page treatment and is expected to deliver a full script by March. Kennedy noted that both Filoni and Brennan are strongly aligned with Kinberg’s vision for these future installments.
The status of the film by James Mangold appears less certain at this moment. Kennedy described the script written by Mangold and Beau Willimon as incredible and noted that it breaks the mold of traditional storytelling in the galaxy. Despite this praise, she admitted the project is currently on hold. It seems the studio is prioritizing other stories while keeping this unique concept on the back burner for the time being.
Fans waiting for updates on films by Taika Waititi and Donald Glover received somewhat hopeful news. Kennedy confirmed that Waititi has turned in a script she described as hilarious and great. Donald Glover has also submitted a script for his Lando project. However, she emphasized that the final decision to move forward with these movies will rest with the incoming leadership team.
Kennedy also addressed rumors regarding other high-profile directors. She confirmed that she had exploratory discussions with David Fincher about a potential film. These talks did not lead to a formal commitment but show the studio’s interest in working with prestige filmmakers. She also mentioned similar conversations with Alex Garland. Additionally, she revealed that a project titled ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’ by Steven Soderbergh is not moving forward despite having a completed script.
The interview painted a picture of a franchise in transition as it prepares for a new era under Filoni and Brennan. While some projects like the Kinberg trilogy are charging ahead, others await the green light from the new regime. Kennedy expressed confidence in her successors and their ability to guide the saga into the 2030s.
