Kenneth Branagh initiated a significant journey when he introduced the God of Thunder to moviegoers, and now, over a decade later, he aims to conclude it. The esteemed director, who helmed the original ‘Thor’ in 2011, has expressed his desire to direct one last chapter for Chris Hemsworth’s iconic Marvel character, and his vision appears to diverge notably from the recent offerings of the franchise.

In a conversation with Business Insider, Branagh reminisced about his time making the first film and confirmed that Marvel had sought his return for ‘Thor: The Dark World’, but he declined, citing that the three-year production of the original had exhausted him. He mentioned that Marvel was disappointed by his decision, stating simply, “I don’t have it in me.”

That hiatus extended longer as the franchise transitioned through directors Alan Taylor for ‘Thor: The Dark World’ and Taika Waititi for ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ and ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’. Branagh admitted he watched the sequels with “a mix of tremendous pride and amazement at the many ways such stories can go.” However, he has never fully detached from the character, and his remarks to Business Insider indicate that a distinct creative vision has been forming in his mind for quite some time.

The vision he articulates is a grounded, emotional farewell reminiscent of James Mangold’s ‘Logan’, a stripped-down Wolverine narrative that resonated with critics and audiences alike through its raw, intimate approach to superhero storytelling.

Branagh envisions something akin for the Asgardian, a concluding film that prioritizes depth over spectacle, allowing Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and the rest of the cast a proper resolution. Whether he would take the director’s chair himself remains uncertain, as he acknowledged that Marvel’s long-term strategy likely has its own plans regarding that.

Branagh’s comments come at a time when discussions around ‘Thor 5’ are gaining momentum, with Hemsworth recently sharing in a podcast that he anticipates portraying the character a “couple more times.” Waititi has confirmed he will not return to direct. Hemsworth has also expressed a desire to take the character in a more serious direction, especially after the criticism that ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ leaned too heavily into comedy.

From a distance, Branagh has observed the sequels unfold and reflected that it “would be something very beautiful to take those characters into their own particular sunset,” describing it as potentially “a beautiful thing.” The prospect of the original director returning to conclude the narrative he helped create is undeniably appealing, and MCU fans seem eager for a version of Thor that is treated with the seriousness it deserves.

Meanwhile, Hemsworth is already set to reprise his role as Thor in the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which will provide audiences with another glimpse of the character’s status before any standalone finale is discussed. Regardless of Branagh’s involvement, the case he is making for a final, character-driven Thor story is one that Marvel would be wise to consider.
