The proposed ‘Star Wars’ film ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’ is back in the spotlight. This resurgence comes from reports and comments made by actor Adam Driver, alongside industry insights into Lucasfilm and Disney’s plans.

The concept for the movie was first introduced in October 2025 when Adam Driver revealed that he collaborated with director Steven Soderbergh on a pitch for a new ‘Star Wars’ narrative. Set after ‘The Rise of Skywalker’, the film would center on Ben Solo, also known as Kylo Ren, who would still be alive, with Rey on a quest to find him as part of a redemption arc.

Driver noted that the project was in development for several years but was ultimately rejected by Disney. While Lucasfilm leaders Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni were supportive, the final decision rested with Disney executives. This rejection spurred fans to rally for the film online, launching petitions and social media campaigns that garnered thousands of supporters.

At that time, Disney did not publicly address the fan response, and the project was largely deemed canceled.

However, recent discussions within the film industry have reignited interest in the idea. Reports indicate that the concept behind ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’ may still hold potential within the ‘Star Wars’ franchise, even if the original version is not progressing.

Part of the ongoing debate relates to the current trajectory of ‘Star Wars’ in theaters. Disney has been focusing on expanding the franchise through diverse storytelling, including projects like ‘The Mandalorian’ and ‘Grogu’ as well as ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’. These films aimed to carve out a new direction for the franchise following ‘The Rise of Skywalker’.

However, ‘The Mandalorian’ and ‘Grogu’ reportedly did not perform as well as anticipated at the box office. Industry reports suggest that its opening weekend was lower than previous ‘Star Wars’ films, with a significant drop in the second week. These results have sparked discussions about the best path forward for future ‘Star Wars’ movies.

One perspective, shared in various commentary pieces, posits that ‘Star Wars’ may benefit from returning to more interconnected, central narratives rather than smaller spin-offs. The idea is that audiences tend to respond more positively when films feel like major events linked to the main saga.

This brings ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’ back into the conversation. Some reports suggest that if Lucasfilm decides to pursue a new sequel-era direction, potentially involving a new trilogy from writer Simon Kinberg, elements from the canceled Ben Solo project could still be utilized.

This anticipated trilogy is expected to continue Rey’s journey after the events of ‘The Rise of Skywalker’. In this context, Ben Solo could return as part of Rey’s mission to rebuild the Jedi Order. Speculation indicates that the first film of this trilogy might even incorporate aspects of the original ‘Hunt for Ben Solo’ concept, particularly the narrative of Rey searching for Ben and reintegrating him into the larger storyline.

The initial pitch aimed to deepen the emotional bond between Rey and Ben Solo while broadening the post–Skywalker Saga universe. Although Disney rejected the standalone version of the film, the fundamental idea has not entirely faded from fan discussions or industry speculation.

As of now, there is no official confirmation regarding the production of ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’. The only verified information stems from Adam Driver’s previous remarks and ongoing reports about Lucasfilm’s future endeavors. Nevertheless, the dialogue surrounding it indicates that interest in the story remains strong.
