The biographical film centering on NBA legend Dennis Rodman’s infamous mid-season excursion has officially secured a new lead actor. LaKeith Stanfield is set to portray the eccentric Chicago Bulls forward in ’48 Hours in Vegas’, a project that explores the athlete’s chaotic timeline during the 1998 NBA Finals. This casting development revitalizes the production following the departure of previously attached star Jonathan Majors.

The narrative focuses on the sanctioned two-day vacation Rodman took to Las Vegas while the Bulls were on the verge of a championship three-peat. Head coach Phil Jackson famously granted the request on the condition that Rodman return within exactly 48 hours. The incident was previously highlighted in the ESPN documentary series ‘The Last Dance’, which detailed the tension between Rodman’s erratic behavior and his on-court dominance.

Stanfield confirmed his involvement in the film, stating his intent to create work that honors Rodman’s legacy as a trailblazer. The actor noted the complexity of the figure who “moved to the beat of his own drum” despite professional obstacles. This role marks a shift for the production as it moves forward with principal photography plans under studio Lionsgate.

Rick Famuyiwa has also boarded the project to direct the feature and write the next draft of the screenplay, originally penned by Jordan VanDina. Famuyiwa previously worked with Stanfield on the 2015 film ‘Dope’. The production team includes Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Aditya Sood, who are producing under their Lord Miller banner.

The film aims to blend high-stakes sports drama with the surreal nature of Rodman’s celebrity status during the late 90s. The script reportedly examines the friendship between Rodman and his anxious assistant GM during the wild weekend in Sin City. No release window has been confirmed following this major casting adjustment.
