HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ has taken its time to unfold, introducing an alien conspiracy in small-town Nebraska while keeping the two Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, at a distance. By the end of episode two, Hal was shot and off-world to interrogate his mentor, Sinestro, leaving many threads untied as we entered the third episode.

Instead of addressing those loose ends immediately, ‘Lanterns‘ made a bold choice in episode three, titled “OutKast.” This hour shifts focus entirely from the Rushville investigation to delve into John Stewart’s backstory.

The episode begins with Stewart falling into darkness and landing on a pile of mattresses in what appears to be an abandoned shopping mall. He finds a door labeled “Manager” and steps into a job interview conducted by a Guardian. What follows is an extended flashback that reveals how Stewart arrived at that moment, reframing his journey to becoming a Green Lantern.

Stewart’s path began long before he met Hal. His parents, Bernadette and John Stewart Sr., raised him with the intention of instilling fearlessness to earn a Green Lantern ring, employing training methods akin to those of elite athletes. The pilot’s earlier scene of Stewart Sr. shooting an apple off his son’s head and Stewart’s connection to birds both trace back to this unique upbringing.

One of the episode’s most shocking moments reveals Hal’s unintended impact on Stewart’s military career. While Stewart was tracking a Russian criminal kingpin for nine months, Hal intervened as Green Lantern, capturing the target and causing an international incident that ended Stewart’s military career. This led to a downward spiral for Stewart, culminating in a moment of frustration where he shot his television during a news report about the fallout, only to be pulled back from despair by Bernadette.

During the interview that frames the episode, the Guardian questions Stewart about any resentment he might feel towards Hal, highlighting Hal’s rogue actions that went against the Guardians’ orders. This revelation recontextualizes Stewart’s recruitment, suggesting the Guardians were not merely seeking someone for Hal to mentor.

The Guardian then asks Stewart if he would be willing to replace Hal, even if Hal continues to view him as a backup. Stewart contemplates whether that would be his actual orders, to which the Guardian confirms it would be if he accepts the position. The scene concludes with the Guardian asking Stewart why he believes he was chosen for this path, to which Stewart cryptically replies that he already knows the answer, a line that looms over the rest of the season.

The episode wraps up as the timeline aligns with the pilot, showing Stewart and Hal meeting for the first time. Hal’s offhand comment about the Stewart family being “the midwest Huxtables” sets the stage for their unique partnership that has already been hinted at in Rushville. This structural choice to pause the main mystery for an entire hour is risky but effectively reshapes every interaction between Hal and Stewart seen so far.

With Stewart’s true mission now revealed and Sinestro’s interest in him intensifying, ‘Lanterns’ has set the stage for a fourth episode with significantly higher stakes for both Green Lanterns. The nature of Stewart’s unspoken answer to the Guardian remains one of the season’s most intriguing mysteries.
