DC’s small-screen venture has been gradually winning over fans with a mystery that unfolds at a measured pace. Instead of relying on immediate cosmic action, the series has focused on the complex relationship between its two main characters, banking on strong character development to engage viewers before the overarching conspiracy fully unfolds.

This approach has proven effective throughout a season that alternates between dual timelines, shifting from a 2016 training arc to a present-day investigation linked to earlier events in the DC Universe. Episode 3 primarily explored the past, offering fans a closer look at younger versions of key characters before diverting from the main mystery.

Now, a sneak peek at episode 4, titled “Weenie,” indicates a return to familiar territory. The episode airs this Sunday, bringing the narrative back into both the 2016 and 2026 timelines after last week’s detour, with the main cast expected to take center stage once more.

The central cast features Kyle Chandler as veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as new recruit John Stewart, the two intergalactic officers whose investigation into a murder in the American heartland has drawn them into a much larger cosmic conspiracy. Their case revolves around the small town of Rushville, Nebraska, where sinister ranchers, enigmatic aliens, and murder have all become intertwined.

Episode 4 is set to feature a broad ensemble cast, including Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry Kane, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe Macon, and Jason Ritter as Billy Macon, alongside Laura Linney and Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner. Ulrich Thomsen’s Thaal Sinestro is also anticipated to play a role in the episode, further enriching the show’s expanding rogues gallery.

The series has received positive reviews for the chemistry between its leads, with The Hollywood Reporter highlighting the “dysfunctional buddy space-cop banter” between Chandler and Pierre, describing Chandler’s performance as a blend of “angry and sad, heroic and cowardly.” This dynamic has emerged as the show’s primary appeal, even as its larger mythology unfolds at a deliberate pace.

The Playlist echoed similar sentiments regarding the central duo, portraying Chandler’s Hal as “genuinely an unapologetic jerk” whose impulsiveness sharply contrasts with Pierre’s more disciplined, rule-abiding John. This tension, stemming from their vastly different approaches to heroism, has become the emotional core that propels the show’s slower mystery elements forward.

Created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and comics writer Tom King, ‘Lanterns’ has established itself as one of the more grounded entries in the new DC Universe, opting for a murder mystery that gradually unveils its cosmic stakes rather than relying on large-scale spectacle. With a total of eight episodes in the season, it has now reached its midpoint, placing significant pressure on episode 4 to begin weaving its disparate threads together.

Fans eager for the mystery to deepen will have their chance this weekend as the timelines converge once more, setting the stage for what could be a crucial turning point as the season progresses.
