Some casting announcements come with enough hidden details to send comic book enthusiasts into detective mode, and few characters this season have ignited as much speculation as one of HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ newest additions. Even before the show premiered, observant fans had already noticed a peculiar naming pattern that seemed too intentional to be mere coincidence.

Paul Ben-Victor’s character, Antaan, made his official debut in the show’s second episode, “Trust Fall,” introduced as an alien figure committed to revealing the truth and seeking vengeance against those who have harmed his people. This description alone was enough to reignite the speculation that has been brewing since the character’s casting was first announced back in April 2025.

The theory revolves around Atrocitus, one of the most significant villains in Green Lantern comics and the founder of the rage-driven Red Lantern Corps. Given how closely Antaan’s backstory aligns with Atrocitus’s comic book origins, many fans suspect that Antaan is merely a placeholder name concealing his true identity until the show is ready to unveil it.

Created by writer Geoff Johns and artist Ethan Van Sciver, Atrocitus first appeared in ‘Green Lantern’ Vol. 4, #25 in January 2008. In the comics, Atrocitus, originally named Atros, was one of the few survivors of a massacre executed by the Manhunters in his home Space Sector 666, an attack that claimed the lives of his wife and children, leaving him consumed by hatred for the Guardians of the Universe, who had originally created the rogue Manhunters.

This backstory aligns almost perfectly with what ‘Lanterns’ has revealed about Antaan thus far. The show’s version of the character similarly identifies as a survivor of a Manhunter-led genocide, driven by an intense and unyielding need to reveal the truth and seek justice on his own terms, echoing the emotional journey that characterizes Atrocitus in the source material.

Fans have also pointed out the phonetic similarity between the names, noting that Atrocitus’s original comic book name, Atros, closely resembles Antaan. Given how unusual it would be for the show to introduce a completely original character with such closely matching motivations and origin details, many longtime readers view the naming of Antaan as a deliberate misdirection rather than a coincidence.

If Antaan is ultimately revealed to be Atrocitus, it would significantly expand ‘Lanterns’ cosmic stakes beyond its Earth-bound murder mystery setup. In the comics, Atrocitus went on to establish the Red Lantern Corps, wielders powered by rage instead of willpower, introducing a new color to the emotional spectrum within the franchise’s mythology.

This possibility becomes even more captivating considering the show has already confirmed Sinestro’s live-action debut earlier in the same episode, reintroducing one of Green Lantern’s most iconic villains after a long absence from any live-action adaptation. Layering an Atrocitus reveal on top of that would suggest ‘Lanterns’ is intentionally building toward a much larger cosmic threat than its initially suggested grounded, small-town Nebraska setting.

Some skeptics argue that the show could simply be introducing an original character who shares thematic similarities with Atrocitus, rather than adapting the character directly under a new name. However, given how closely Antaan’s introduced motivations align with Atrocitus’s established comic book history, this explanation seems increasingly unlikely to many fans closely following the theory.

With ‘Lanterns’ continuing its weekly rollout on HBO and HBO Max, viewers won’t have to wait long to discover whether Antaan’s true identity is confirmed.
