‘Lanterns’ New Mid-Season Trailer Reveals HBO’s Green Lantern Investigation
James Gunn and Peter Safran’s revamped DC Universe has taken a notably grounded approach with its latest television offering, trading the cosmic spectacle typically associated with ‘Green Lantern’ for a narrative closer to a prestige crime drama. This tonal shift has made ‘Lanterns’ one of the more intriguing entries in DC Studios’ Chapter One lineup, opting for a slow-burn investigation over traditional superhero antics.
Often described as a superhero version of ‘True Detective,’ the series stars Kyle Chandler as veteran Lantern Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as new recruit John Stewart. The two intergalactic space cops find themselves reluctantly paired while investigating a murder in the American heartland. Its noir-inspired take on a classic DC property has set it apart from other offerings in the studio’s current slate.
With the season now progressing, HBO has unveiled a new mid-season trailer that provides fans with their most in-depth look yet at the unfolding mystery, showcasing fresh footage from the latter half of the season’s episodes. The show continues to air weekly on Sundays, allowing fans to savor new developments rather than bingeing the entire season at once.

The season’s central mystery increasingly revolves around a term first hinted at in the show’s full trailer: manhunters. According to the official logline, Hal and John become “drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” with much of the season’s tension stemming from uncovering the significance of that term within the show’s universe.
Beyond the murder investigation, the series delves deeply into the dynamic between its two distinct leads. Chandler’s Jordan is depicted as the more experienced, battle-hardened Lantern, while Pierre’s Stewart embodies a newer, more disciplined perspective, creating natural tension as they are compelled to rely on each other throughout their investigation.
Showrunner Chris Mundy has articulated that the show’s deeper thematic interests revolve around succession within the Lantern Corps. Reflecting on this concept, Mundy explained that the series probes questions of replacement, particularly regarding when someone should step aside and when it’s time for the next individual to take over, as shared in comments with Men’s Health.
This theme is visually represented through the show’s early framing of Hal as a reluctant mentor to John, training him in the use of the power ring while grappling with his own uncertain role within the Corps. This dynamic adds emotional stakes that extend beyond the central murder mystery.

The series also features Garret Dillahunt and Kelly Macdonald in significant supporting roles, alongside Ulrich Thomsen as the key antagonist Sinestro. Nathan Fillion reprises his role as Guy Gardner, connecting the character to his earlier appearance in 2025’s ‘Superman,’ thus providing a direct link to the broader DC Universe.
The show’s eight-episode first season has been airing weekly since its premiere on August 16, with new episodes available every Sunday night on HBO and streaming simultaneously on HBO Max. This release structure positions ‘Lanterns’ as one of the final major DCU releases of the summer season, with its finale scheduled to conclude the story on October 4.
With the mid-season trailer now teasing new footage from the remaining episodes, fans are eagerly anticipating the show to further deepen its central mystery before reaching its conclusion. Given the series’ deliberate, procedural pacing thus far, viewers can expect the full picture behind the manhunters and their connection to Hal and John’s investigation to gradually come into focus.
