Lego Invites Fans to Create the First-Ever Marvel and ‘Star Wars’ Crossover Set
Every child who ever combined two toy lines on the living room floor has pondered the same question: what happens when Darth Vader encounters the Avengers? Lego has been exploring this concept for months, and now the Lego Marvel and ‘Star Wars’ crossover set is officially on the way.
The exciting twist is that the company is not going it alone. It is inviting fans to contribute their ideas.
Lego Ideas, the brand’s fan-submission platform, typically rejects entries based on licenses it already holds, including both ‘Star Wars’ and Marvel. This makes the sanctioned crossover challenge a rare exception and a significant milestone for the community.
The timing is also strategic. With ‘Star Wars’ celebrating its 50th anniversary next year and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ on the horizon, Lego is perfectly positioned to capitalize on this mashup excitement.
At New York Comic Con on Saturday, Lego unveiled a groundbreaking Lego Ideas challenge called ‘Hope Assembles’. Builders are encouraged to merge the worlds of Marvel and ‘Star Wars’ for a chance to see their creations transformed into an official Lego set.
Filmmaker, actor, and Marvel Comics writer Kevin Smith made the announcement, stating that the challenge embodies the same spirit of creativity as the ‘Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles’ comic series he is developing, which is set to launch in January as the first official crossover between the two comic universes.
The promotional art showcases what fans might envision. Characters like Darth Vader, Thanos, Doctor Doom, Ultron, and Venom, who wields a glowing red lightsaber, are depicted alongside stormtroopers, with the Death Star and TIE fighters in the background.
Fans can submit original builds across three categories: vehicles, characters, and scenes. The ‘Star Wars’ content Lego wants builders to focus on comes from ‘A New Hope’, the original 1977 film, and builds are limited to 3,000 bricks.
Submissions are open until November 12, with community voting scheduled for December 8. Winners will be announced in early 2027, and the top designs could be turned into actual Lego sets.
There are guidelines to follow, of course. The rules are designed to maintain a family-friendly atmosphere, which still allows for imaginative concepts, such as Doctor Doom lounging on the Emperor’s throne in the Death Star.
This announcement comes after a summer filled with speculation. In August, a leaked 75481 Iron Falcon set surfaced, branded ‘Star Wars x Marvel 2027’, featuring mashup minifigures like Spider-Han and Hulkbacca.
That leak coincided with the announcement from Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm Publishing regarding the comic series from Smith and artist David Marquez. The series has since expanded from five issues to six, as revealed during the New York Comic Con panel.
Lego’s involvement now solidifies the crossover not only in the toy aisle but also on comic shop shelves. Together, they signal a full ‘Star Wars’ and Marvel year across comics and bricks in 2027.
Part of the allure lies in the sheer novelty. While Lego Ideas has collaborated with ‘Star Wars’ before, including the Republic Gunship vote in 2020, this marks the first time one of its challenges merges two of the biggest franchises in pop culture.
It also changes the usual narrative. Instead of a corporate committee determining which characters collide, the mashup emerges from builders who know exactly which fantasy matchups they wish to see.
For collectors, the stakes are high. A winning design could become a permanent fixture in the Lego catalog, presenting a rare opportunity for a hobbyist builder working from a collection of spare bricks.
