A new anime called Leviathan is coming to Netflix on July 10, and it’s looking like something special. This show mixes steampunk style, big airship battles, and emotional stories in a version of 1914 that’s very different from our own.

It’s based on the books by Scott Westerfeld, with art originally done by Keith Thompson.

The anime is being made by Qubic Pictures and Studio Orange. Qubic is known for Eden and some Star Wars: Visions episodes, while Studio Orange is the team behind BEASTARS and Trigun Stampede. It’s a mix of Western ideas and Japanese animation, with a lot of care going into the visuals, characters, and music.

The story follows two teens caught in the middle of a global war. One is Prince Aleksandar, or Alek, who’s on the run after being blamed for something he didn’t do. The other is Deryn Sharp, a girl pretending to be a boy so she can join the military. Their worlds collide on a huge living airship made of bioengineered creatures called the HMS Leviathan.

Together, they take part in a journey that could change the war, and maybe the world.

The creators say the anime stays true to the books while bringing the action and visuals to life in new ways. Scott Westerfeld said, “It’s been wonderful to work so closely with Studio Orange and Qubic on this adaptation of Leviathan. Series illustrator Keith Thompson and I have loved watching another layer added to our already weird creation. Walking tanks and flying whales, brought to life with the dynamism of state-of-the-art anime!”

The Japanese voice cast includes Ayumu Murase as Alek and Natsumi Fujiwara as Deryn. The music is also a big part of the show. Nobuko Toda and Kazuma Jinnouchi, who’ve worked on Ghost in the Shell and Metal Gear Solid, are doing the main score.

And fans of Studio Ghibli will be excited to hear that Joe Hisaishi—known for Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke—is also contributing original songs.

Leviathan will be available only on Netflix, starting July 10.
