Netflix is set to unveil a fresh adaptation of ‘Little House on the Prairie’, bringing a new version of the Ingalls family to audiences. This series draws inspiration from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved books and features a new cast stepping into roles cherished for generations.

The original series, which aired from 1974 to 1983, catapulted actors like Michael Landon, Karen Grassle, Melissa Gilbert, Melissa Sue Anderson, and Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush into stardom. Given the iconic nature of those performances, casting a new Charles, Caroline, Laura, and Mary Ingalls posed a significant challenge for the Netflix team.

Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine shared with PEOPLE that the casting process was centered around finding actors who could infuse fresh energy into the characters while maintaining the essence of the original narrative.

The new series features Luke Bracey as Charles “Pa” Ingalls, Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline “Ma” Ingalls, Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls, and Skywalker Hughes as Mary Ingalls. The storyline begins prior to the birth of Carrie Ingalls, allowing the show to explore the family’s early journey.

For Sonnenshine, establishing a believable connection between Charles and Caroline was crucial. She emphasized that the authentic relationship between the characters significantly contributed to the story’s charm.

“That was really [what we were] looking for, a great chemistry,” Sonnenshine told PEOPLE, noting that the bond between Charles and Caroline was a key reason for her attachment to the story.

She praised Luke Bracey’s portrayal of Charles, highlighting his ability to embody the beloved father figure. According to Sonnenshine, Bracey brings a blend of strength and kindness to the role.

“He’s got a gentleness, but he’s also very rugged,” she said, expressing her vision of him as a character who could thrive on the prairie while building a home for his family.

Crosby Fitzgerald also made a strong impression during casting. Sonnenshine noted that the actress effectively showcased Caroline’s strength, humor, and warmth, forming a natural connection with the rest of the family.

“She’s strong. She’s actually very funny; she’s got great timing,” Sonnenshine said, explaining that Fitzgerald’s chemistry with Bracey and the younger actors helped create a genuine family dynamic.

The young actors portraying Laura and Mary were equally vital in shaping the new series. Sonnenshine revealed that Skywalker Hughes initially auditioned for Laura but was ultimately deemed a better fit for Mary.

“There’s just something about her. She has this extraordinary grace and gentleness,” Sonnenshine remarked about Hughes. Finding the right Laura was particularly important, as the story unfolds through her perspective. Alice Halsey takes on the role of the adventurous young girl who leads viewers through life on the prairie.

Sonnenshine noted that Halsey possessed the essential qualities for the character, commending her natural curiosity and emotional depth. “I knew right away, that I said, ‘Oh, that’s Laura,’ because she really embodies the spirit of Laura,” the showrunner explained.

The first season chronicles the Ingalls family’s efforts to establish a new life on the prairie near Independence, Kansas. Alongside the main cast, the ensemble includes Warren Christie, Jocko Sims, Meegwun Fairbrother, Alyssa Wapanatâhk, Wren Zhawenim Gotts, and Barrett Doss. Sonnenshine believes this new adaptation will resonate with both longtime fans and newcomers discovering the story for the first time.

“Everybody wants to be Laura,” she said, emphasizing that the series aims to introduce the cherished tale to a new generation while honoring its original charm.
