Maisie Williams Proposes Return as Wolfsbane in Marvel’s Upcoming ‘X-Men’ Movie
Maisie Williams has long been associated with her iconic role as Arya Stark, but before ‘Game of Thrones’ wrapped up, she ventured into a different realm of storytelling with her role in 2020’s ‘The New Mutants.’ Despite facing numerous delays and reshoots, the film ended up being one of the lowest-grossing entries in the X-Men franchise, raking in only $49.2 million globally against a budget estimated between $67 million and $80 million.
Despite the film’s struggles, Williams’ portrayal of Rahne Sinclair, also known as Wolfsbane—a Scottish mutant who transforms into a wolf while grappling with her religious upbringing—remains a highlight of the production. With Marvel now gearing up to introduce its own version of the X-Men within the MCU, Williams has expressed her eagerness to reprise her role.
In discussing the potential for her return, Williams stated, “I really liked playing Rahne… We’ve got to bring that back. Maybe it’ll be 28 years after the first, but I think we should.”
This statement comes at a pivotal time for the franchise, as Marvel Studios has officially announced its X-Men reboot set for May 5, 2028, under the direction of Jake Schreier and the leadership of Kevin Feige. The film will focus on Jean Grey’s arrival at Professor Xavier’s school for gifted youngsters, with Sadie Sink cast as Jean Grey, Christopher Abbott as Xavier, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, and Adam Driver portraying the villainous Mister Sinister.
The narrative is expected to concentrate on the first class of mutants trained by Xavier, which opens the door for the introduction of additional characters as the roster expands. However, it remains uncertain whether Wolfsbane will be part of this initial lineup, as Marvel has yet to confirm any plans for her character in this new iteration.
Williams’ remarks reflect a growing trend among actors from Fox’s earlier X-Men films, many of whom are keen to return now that Marvel is integrating mutants into its cinematic universe. With numerous past adaptations now outside of MCU continuity, speculation continues about which actors might receive another opportunity to portray characters that were previously overlooked.

For Williams, returning to the role of Wolfsbane would provide a chance for redemption after her character was overshadowed in one of the more notorious box office flops in superhero film history. ‘The New Mutants’ struggled with a horror-themed reimagining that never quite found its footing amid distributor changes and a lengthy delay between filming and release.
Considering the distinct approach Marvel Studios has taken to franchise-building compared to Fox’s earlier X-Men era, a Wolfsbane revival under this new banner would come with heightened expectations and resources. Whether Williams’ pitch gains traction with Marvel remains to be seen, but she has clearly expressed her interest as excitement for the new film builds toward 2028.
