Margaret Qualley has emerged as one of the busiest dramatic actresses today, seamlessly transitioning from awards-season favorites to genre explorations without pause. This fall, she adds another significant project to her repertoire, collaborating with an Oscar-nominated cinematographer who is making her second foray into feature directing.

That director is Rachel Morrison, renowned for her groundbreaking cinematography in films like ‘Mudbound’ and ‘Black Panther,’ who steps behind the camera for 2024’s ‘The Fire Inside.’ Her latest feature reunites her with Amazon MGM Studios for a romantic drama that is already creating buzz ahead of its festival debut.

The film, ‘Love of Your Life,’ has just released its first official trailer, offering audiences a glimpse of Qualley’s portrayal of Maya, a young woman whose life changes unexpectedly after a chance meeting ignites a sweeping romance. The film is set to premiere at TIFF’s Special Presentations program on September 13 before expanding to a broader release.

Maya’s serendipitous encounter with Charlie, portrayed by ‘The Night Agent’ breakout Gabriel Basso, quickly evolves into a whirlwind romance and a future she never anticipated. When that future is abruptly disrupted, Maya finds herself on a path that compels her to confront her identity, desires, and her ability to embrace love once more.

The screenplay for the film is penned by Julia Cox, marking Morrison’s second collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios following her directorial debut. Ryan Gosling and Jessie Henderson serve as producers, adding another layer of star power behind the scenes.

In addition to Qualley and Basso, the film boasts a remarkable ensemble cast featuring Aaron Pierre, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Catherine Keener, Tamara Lawrance, and Corey Johnson. This blend of emerging talents and seasoned actors provides Morrison with a diverse range of performances as the narrative unfolds through Maya’s evolving circumstances.

On the technical side, Morrison collaborated with cinematographer Todd Banhazl, editor Jennifer Vecchiarello, production designer Laura Ellis Cricks, costume designer Jill Taylor, and composer Dustin O’Halloran, creating a creative team equipped to match the emotional depth suggested by the film’s marketing.

‘Love of Your Life’ marks Qualley’s third film this year, following her role in ‘How to Make a Killing’ and ahead of her appearance in Ridley Scott’s upcoming blockbuster ‘The Dog Stars.’ This level of output solidifies her position as one of the busiest and most sought-after actresses in both prestigious dramas and larger studio projects this year.

For Morrison, this film signifies a continuation of the momentum she established with ‘The Fire Inside,’ which premiered at TIFF in 2024 to a mixed but generally favorable reception. Returning to the same festival with her second feature indicates a strategic approach to advancing her directing career through high-profile fall premieres.

Following its TIFF premiere, ‘Love of Your Life’ will open in select theaters on October 7 before streaming globally on Prime Video starting October 14. This staggered release strategy reflects how Amazon has managed several of its high-profile awards-adjacent titles this year, providing a brief theatrical window before making the film widely accessible to streaming audiences.

With its combination of sweeping romance and unexpected personal transformation, ‘Love of Your Life’ appears poised to be one of the fall’s most emotionally impactful releases, particularly for viewers drawn to Qualley’s rising reputation as one of her generation’s most versatile leading actresses.
