Corporate mega-mergers rarely escalate into public feuds involving movie stars, industry executives, and numerous entertainment figures weighing in, but that’s precisely what has unfolded with the ongoing deal between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. What started as one actor’s pointed critique of a business transaction has spiraled into a larger, contentious debate playing out across social media and trade publications.

At the heart of this situation is Mark Ruffalo, known for being one of Hollywood’s more outspoken activist voices. His history of advocacy made his recent comments regarding the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger unsurprising in tone, although the ensuing fallout has proven anything but routine.

The controversy began with an Instagram post Ruffalo shared on August 21, where he criticized the merger’s potential impact on Hollywood and accused the Ellison family of complicity in what he termed the “genocide” against Palestinians, linking that criticism to Oracle’s connections with the Israeli military. Paramount quickly responded, with a spokesperson labeling the remarks as “antisemitic” and expressing concern over the invocation of antisemitic tropes in the context of a business dispute.

This accusation escalated rapidly. A group of industry figures, including Haim Saban, Lawrence Bender, and Teddy Schwarzman, representing The Brigade—a coalition of around a thousand Jewish entertainment professionals—signed a statement denouncing Ruffalo, arguing that his comments depicted “Jewish executives as a secretive and powerful wealth-hoarding elite delighting in mass death.”

In response, Ruffalo has garnered substantial support. Over 170 Jewish figures from the entertainment industry and beyond have signed an open letter defending the actor. Notable signatories include Joel Coen, Todd Haynes, Ilana Glazer, Hannah Einbinder, James Schamus, and Wallace Shawn, with the letter describing the accusations against Ruffalo as a “smear campaign” based on “spurious charges of antisemitism.”

Ruffalo himself has firmly rejected the antisemitism claim, calling Paramount’s characterization “appalling and fundamentally dishonest.” He emphasized the distinction between criticizing Israeli government policy and criticizing Jewish people as a whole. “Criticizing the actions of the Israeli prime minister, a military technology contract, or the executives who supply it is not the same as criticizing Jewish people,” he stated.

‘Hacks’ star Hannah Einbinder, who is Jewish and has been vocal in her support for Palestinian rights, was among the first major figures to publicly support Ruffalo. She argued that framing his comments as antisemitic simply because the Ellison family is Jewish misuses the term and expressed concern that equating criticism of Israeli policy with antisemitism ultimately dilutes its meaning in situations where Jewish communities genuinely face danger.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Kenneth Lonergan also voiced his support, describing the antisemitism accusation against Ruffalo as “overtly preposterous” and labeling it a “cynical and disgusting lie.”

The dispute has effectively divided the Jewish entertainment community, reflecting a broader and increasingly public disagreement over where legitimate criticism of Israeli government actions ends and antisemitic rhetoric begins. Both sides frame their positions as protective of Jewish communities, despite arriving at starkly different conclusions regarding Ruffalo’s original comments.

Paramount’s initial statement reiterated that the company does not “tolerate prejudice of any kind, against anyone,” while maintaining its stance that Ruffalo’s specific language crossed a line. This framing has done little to quell the controversy, with both sides continuing to publicly assert their positions well over a week after Ruffalo’s original post.

With hundreds of industry figures now on record on either side of the dispute, the controversy shows no signs of fading quietly, even as the underlying Paramount-Warner Bros. merger negotiations continue to progress in the background.
