Marvel and Star Wars Are Finally Crossing Over in ‘Star Wars/Marvel Hope Assembles’ Here’s What We Know
‘Star Wars’ and Marvel Comics have a shared history that dates back further than many fans might think. Marvel published the very first ‘Star Wars’ comic adaptation just six weeks before George Lucas’s original film premiered in 1977. This early collaboration famously helped save Marvel from bankruptcy at that time, establishing a bond that has endured through decades of licensing changes and various publishing eras.
Despite this long-standing connection, the two universes have never officially crossed paths in a unified story—until now. Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm Publishing have announced ‘Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles,’ marking the first true crossover event between the franchises, set to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’ in 2027.

This five-issue limited series will be penned by filmmaker Kevin Smith, with artwork from David Marquez, known for his contributions to ‘Uncanny X-Men’ and ‘Civil War II.’ The official premise reveals that a reality-altering spell brings the Rebels and Imperials from the original film trilogy into Marvel’s Earth-616 continuity. This forces iconic characters like Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Chewbacca to join forces with Marvel heroes such as Captain America, Spider-Man, and the Hulk against a formidable threat that includes Darth Vader, Doctor Doom, and Thanos.

The first issue is scheduled to debut in January 2027, with the series wrapping up in May 2027, just ahead of the actual fiftieth anniversary of ‘A New Hope’ on May 25. Smith, who has previously written comic runs such as ‘Guardian Devil’ on ‘Daredevil’ and stories for Green Arrow and Batman, described this project as a lifelong dream. He fondly remembers having a subscription to Marvel’s original ‘Star Wars’ comics in the early 1980s.

Smith expressed his enthusiasm for the project, noting that while he enjoyed following the adventures of Luke, Leia, and Han as a child, he always wished for characters like Spider-Man or Doctor Doom to crossover into their cinematic saga. When the chance to tell that exact story arose, he was thrilled to take it on, stating he is overjoyed to write ‘Hope Assembles’ for the franchise’s fiftieth anniversary.

C.B. Cebulski, the outgoing Marvel Comics editor-in-chief, echoed Smith’s excitement, calling the crossover one of Marvel’s proudest achievements. He revealed that the concept has been in development since Marvel reacquired the ‘Star Wars’ license from Dark Horse Comics over a decade ago. Cebulski described receiving Lucasfilm’s approval for the project as akin to getting a call from Han Solo himself.
Marquez’s connecting covers for the series suggest a vast cast, featuring characters from the Guardians of the Galaxy, Wolverine, and Professor X to Deadpool, Daredevil, Ultron, and even Grand Moff Tarkin and Greedo from the ‘Star Wars’ universe. Michael Siglain, Lucasfilm Publishing’s creative director, described Smith’s narrative as a heartfelt tribute to both ‘Star Wars’ and Marvel, highlighting how Marquez’s artwork brings this monumental franchise meeting to life.
With the crossover now confirmed as a centerpiece of ‘Star Wars’ fiftieth anniversary publishing slate, fans of both franchises can look forward to an unprecedented team-up when ‘Hope Assembles’ arrives on shelves early next year.
