Movie theaters have been heavily relying on nostalgia this year, with studios banking on audiences returning for a second viewing of films that once shattered box office records. Re-releases, anniversary screenings, and extended cuts have quietly emerged as a dependable strategy in a marketplace still stabilizing.

This approach is now yielding significant results for one of the largest franchises in cinematic history. Marvel Studios, riding a wave of excitement for its upcoming team-up event, decided it was the perfect time to bring back a beloved classic for another run.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ has reclaimed the top spot at the domestic box office, seven years after its original release. The re-release, titled ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’, debuted at No. 1 on Friday, earning an estimated 11.2 million dollars from 3,060 North American screens, with projections suggesting it could reach around 26 million dollars by the weekend’s end.

This version of the film is not just a simple rehash of the 2019 blockbuster. Reports indicate it features a modified ending and new post-credit scenes aimed at teasing ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, the next installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe set to hit theaters on December 18.

Directed once again by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo, the timing appears to be a strategic move. Drawing fans back into theaters for ‘Endgame’ just months before ‘Doomsday’ premieres creates a built-in marketing opportunity, complete with fresh footage that dedicated fans will want to experience without spoilers.

The film’s original run remains one of the most remarkable achievements in Hollywood history. Upon its 2019 release, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ became the second-highest-grossing film ever, amassing 2.799 billion dollars globally, a figure that still trails only 2009’s ‘Avatar’ for the all-time worldwide record.

Close behind Marvel’s returning titan, A24’s eagerly awaited ‘Primetime’ opened in second place with approximately 8.49 million dollars from 2,874 locations, with full weekend estimates around 20.5 million dollars. Starring Robert Pattinson, this drama-thriller portrays Chris Hansen’s time as host of Dateline NBC’s ‘To Catch a Predator’ and has sparked considerable discussion since its debut at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month.

In third place, ‘The Heart of the Beast’ opened with an estimated 7.45 million dollars from 3,435 domestic locations. This survival drama, featuring Brad Pitt and directed by David Ayer, follows a retired veteran navigating a perilous journey to safety after surviving a plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness, projected to earn around 20 million dollars domestically for its opening weekend.

Meanwhile, last week’s box office leader experienced a decline. ‘Resident Evil’, based on the long-standing Capcom video game series, fell to fourth place with 6.9 million dollars across 3,684 locations after a franchise-best debut the previous weekend. The film, directed by Zach Cregger, follows a medical courier, played by Austin Abrams, who becomes embroiled in a zombie outbreak while delivering to a hospital in Raccoon City.

For Marvel, this weekend’s spotlight is undeniably on ‘Endgame’. The fact that a seven-year-old film can outperform a lineup of new theatrical releases highlights the immense goodwill the franchise still enjoys, setting an intriguing precedent for how studios might approach cherished titles as ‘Doomsday’ approaches.

Whether ‘Endgame’ can draw closer to dethroning ‘Avatar’ from its position at the top of the all-time worldwide chart remains uncertain, but this weekend’s figures indicate that Marvel still knows how to attract audiences to theaters, even without a brand-new narrative. The true test will come in December when viewers discover if nostalgia can lead to another significant box office event.
