Marvel Studios took a significant step forward on Friday night by providing fans with solid updates about the long-awaited ‘X-Men‘ reboot. During a showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, the studio revealed a seven-person cast, with director Jake Schreier and Kevin Feige confirming a release date of May 5, 2028. This marks the first X-Men film centered entirely around a new mutant roster since Disney’s acquisition of Fox in 2019, arriving after ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’

While the casting announcement clarified one major aspect of the film, many behind-the-scenes details are still being finalized as production gears up. Sadie Sink, who previously portrayed Jean Grey in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ welcomed her co-stars to the stage, asking the audience, “We’re here to talk about the X-Men. Should we meet some more of the cast?”

In addition to the casting news, a recent report indicates that the film may have secured its cinematographer. Industry insider Christopher Marc shared that Pat Scola, recognized for his work on ‘Pig,’ ‘A Quiet Place: Day One,’ ‘Sing Sing,’ and ‘The Death of Robin Hood,’ is likely set to serve as the director of photography. However, Marvel Studios has yet to officially confirm this, so Scola’s involvement should be viewed as a credible rumor rather than a definitive announcement.

Scola has earned a reputation for his grounded, character-focused visual style, which contrasts with traditional blockbuster aesthetics. This approach could reflect the creative vision that Schreier aims to achieve with the reboot. His diverse portfolio includes everything from the intimate character study ‘Pig’ to the suspenseful horror prequel ‘A Quiet Place: Day One,’ showcasing his versatility in both personal drama and large-scale genre filmmaking.

The cast revealed at D23 features Kit Connor as Scott Summers/Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Maya Boyd as Storm, alongside Sink’s returning Jean Grey. The panel concluded with a surprise appearance from Adam Driver, who announced via video message that he will portray a villain named Nathaniel Milbury, rather than the anticipated mutant antagonist.

Feige mentioned during the panel that more casting announcements are forthcoming, indicating that the lineup revealed at D23 is just the beginning of the film’s ensemble. Schreier previously described his approach as one that balances ideological themes with the personal, soap-opera-style drama that has characterized the X-Men comics, emphasizing the importance of writers who can convey ideology through personal stakes to stay true to the source material.

This upcoming film represents Marvel Studios’ first effort to create an original X-Men team within the MCU, separate from the Fox-era mutants that have already been integrated into the franchise through 2024’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and the forthcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ The earlier film will see the return of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine alongside several mutants from the original Fox franchise, while ‘Doomsday’ is set to feature Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and other veteran X-Men actors reprising their iconic roles.

With a potential cinematographer in place and a cast now unveiled, the reboot seems to be progressing steadily toward production in anticipation of its 2028 release.
