Matt Damon Lost a Ton of Weight for ‘The Odyssey’ and the Results Are Stunning
Matt Damon underwent a significant physical transformation to portray Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic film ‘The Odyssey’. The actor recently shared insights about the rigorous diet and intense training regimen that enabled him to shed a considerable amount of weight for the role.
During an appearance on the New Heights podcast with Jason and Travis Kelce, Damon disclosed that Nolan aimed for him to appear lean yet strong enough to embody the legendary Greek hero. He mentioned that he achieved a weight he hadn’t seen since his teenage years.
“Nolan wanted me lean but strong,” Damon explained. “I used to walk around at between 185 and 200, and I did that whole movie at 167. And I haven’t been that light since high school. So it was a lot of training and a really strict diet.”
Fans first noticed the transformation when set photos emerged online during filming in Europe. Images of Damon in armor, showcasing a noticeably leaner physique, quickly circulated on social media, leaving many viewers astonished by his new look.
Interestingly, the weight loss was not initially part of a movie plan. In a conversation on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live, Damon revealed that the journey began when his doctor recommended a major dietary reset.
The actor spent 90 days avoiding several common foods and beverages, a challenging endeavor. “I did a gut cleanse with my doctor who told me to take 90 days to not eat gluten, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, or sugar,” Damon recounted. “It was awful.” Fortunately, he had support from his wife, who joined him in this strict lifestyle, making it easier to manage.
“My wife did it with me, which was a huge help,” he shared. The actor noted that social situations became tricky during those three months, as many normal activities revolve around food and drinks. Nevertheless, the results were surprising.
“I got in like the best shape of my life without even trying and I realized I had like this gluten intolerance,” Damon stated.
After identifying gluten as a problem, Damon continued to avoid it, which helped him maintain his leaner physique while preparing for ‘The Odyssey’.
Despite the dietary changes, training remained a crucial aspect of his preparation. Damon collaborated with a trainer and adhered to a dedicated fitness routine to build the strength required for the physically demanding role.
‘The Odyssey’ stands as one of the most significant projects of Damon’s career. Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film adapts Homer’s renowned ancient Greek epic, following Odysseus as he faces mythical creatures, dangerous foes, and numerous challenges in his quest to reunite with his wife Penelope after the Trojan War.
Damon leads an impressive cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.
The film is reportedly Christopher Nolan’s most expensive project to date, with a budget estimated at $250 million. It was filmed across various countries, including Greece, Italy, Iceland, Morocco, Scotland, and Malta.
With Damon’s remarkable transformation already capturing attention, fans are eagerly anticipating how he will portray the legendary king of Ithaca when ‘The Odyssey’ hits theaters on July 17.
