‘Maul: Shadow Lord’ Is the Star Wars Crime Thriller Fans Didn’t Expect
When the creative team behind ‘Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord’ began crafting their new Disney+ series, they opted for influences from crime cinema rather than the typical lightsaber duels and space opera. The outcome is a uniquely distinct entry in the franchise that stands apart from traditional narratives.
Head writer Matt Michnovetz revealed that the show draws inspiration from a variety of cinematic classics, naming modern gangster films like ‘Heat’, ‘The Untouchables’, and ‘The Dark Knight’ as key references. This choice signals a significant departure from the usual Star Wars formula, and the series certainly lives up to that expectation.
Supervising director Brad Rau explained that embracing these influences was a strategic storytelling choice. He noted that films like ‘Heat’ and ‘The Dark Knight’, along with a Gotham City-like atmosphere for the planet Janix, allowed the team to maintain a pulpy, heroic action tone without transforming Maul into a mere villain or diluting his character into something unrecognizable. This delicate balance is achieved with remarkable confidence throughout the series.
Set approximately a year after Maul’s defeat at the hands of Ahsoka Tano at the end of the Clone Wars, the series features Sam Witwer reprising his iconic vocal role as the former Sith apprentice. Maul is now scheming to rebuild his criminal empire on Janix, a planet that has thus far escaped the Empire’s attention. The show presents Maul as an even more unsettling figure than audiences have previously encountered, depicting him as a crime lord unraveling under the weight of grief, rage, and an urgent need for control.
Adding depth to the narrative is Brander Lawson, portrayed by Oscar nominee Wagner Moura. Lawson is a hardened police detective whose investigation into Maul’s criminal activities unfolds like a classic noir mystery, featuring bank heists, rival crime syndicates, and intricate layers of intrigue that evolve with each episode. His droid partner, humorously named Two-Boots and voiced by Richard Ayoade, brings a refreshing neo-noir element to a Star Wars story that genuinely feels unlike anything the franchise has attempted before.
The city of Janix draws visual inspiration from Gotham, described by Michnovetz as a sprawling metropolis with a dark underbelly. The film noir tone influences even the character archetypes, with one supporting character originally envisioned as the classic femme fatale. Supervising director Rau mentioned that the animation style was inspired by painter Jeremy Mann and ‘Blade Runner’, featuring a deliberately painterly and pulpy aesthetic that sets Janix apart from familiar Star Wars locales like Coruscant.
The creative team at Nerdist confirmed that the series was designed to feel like a thrilling rollercoaster ride, with Michnovetz describing the entire project as a non-stop experience with a pulpy noir vibe that is truly unique within the Star Wars universe. With a second season already greenlit before the first has even aired, it’s evident that both audiences and Lucasfilm are eager for this darker exploration of the galaxy far, far away.
