Apple TV has long sought the blockbuster streaming success that platforms like Netflix and Disney+ have achieved with ease. After years of big-budget attempts that occasionally hit but rarely dominated the charts, it seems the drought has ended, at least for one particular buddy comedy that took its time to reach audiences.

‘Mayday‘ generated significant buzz prior to its release, largely due to its lengthy wait on the shelf. Reportedly completed in mid-2024, Apple finally set a release date this past July. Such delays typically raise concerns for a film with a production budget in the nine-figure range and featuring one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

However, those worries now appear unfounded as the streaming numbers reveal a different story. ‘Mayday’ is currently dominating the streaming landscape, with the Ryan Reynolds-led film amassing an estimated 955.1 million minutes watched from September 4 to 10, according to Variety, nearly doubling the total of the second most-watched film that week.

This impressive 955.1 million-minute tally marks ‘Mayday’ as Apple TV’s biggest streaming week to date, as per Nielsen data. The film significantly outperformed ‘The Whisper Man’ at 518.1 million minutes, ‘The Runner’ at 516.7 million, ‘Why Did I Get Married Again?’ at 363.8 million, and ‘The Secret Woman’ at 345.5 million, rounding out the top five most-watched films that week.

The film’s success isn’t just reflected in the raw minutes watched. By September 7, just days after its release, ‘Mayday’ had already secured the number one spot for movies both domestically and globally, according to FlixPatrol tracking—a rare achievement for an Apple TV original competing against Netflix’s much larger subscriber base.

‘Mayday’ follows U.S. Navy pilot Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly, portrayed by Reynolds, as he navigates a Cold War-era mission gone awry, leaving him stranded behind enemy lines. He forms an unexpected alliance with Nikolai Ustinov, a former KGB operative played by Kenneth Branagh, who has developed a surprising fondness for American pop culture.

The supporting cast includes Maria Bakalova, Marcin Dorocinski, and David Morse. Directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, known for ‘Game Night’ and ‘Vacation,’ the film runs for 111 minutes and carries a PG-13 rating, blending buddy-comedy elements with classic Cold War spy thriller tension.

The streaming success of ‘Mayday’ coincides with strong reviews, currently holding an 81 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have particularly praised the film’s production quality, with one review highlighting it as “a strong reminder that even a streaming comedy can look as good as any blockbuster.”

Much of this polish seems intentional, as Reynolds has mentioned how ‘Top Gun’ influenced his love for aviation films, describing its allure as making “everything about America just a little shinier, bigger, cooler, faster.” This influence is evident in ‘Mayday,’ which embraces similar aerial spectacle while establishing its own comedic identity.

For a platform that has struggled to consistently make a mark in the weekly streaming conversation, ‘Mayday’s’ performance signifies a genuine milestone rather than just a solid debut. Nearly doubling the next closest competitor in total minutes watched is the kind of result that studios highlight when justifying future investments in original films.

Whether ‘Mayday’ can maintain this momentum in the coming weeks is yet to be determined, but its initial success has already established it as one of the platform’s standout releases of the year. For Reynolds and Branagh, it signals that there is still a significant appetite for Cold War comedy.

The lengthy journey to release now appears less like a warning sign and more like a footnote in the film’s success narrative. A movie that was completed for nearly two years before finally being released could have easily been dismissed as a shelved project, yet the numbers indicate that Apple simply waited for the right moment to unveil it.

This patience seems to have paid off, allowing ‘Mayday’ to debut without the pressure of a crowded release schedule. Regardless of the reasons behind the initial delay, the film’s audience clearly didn’t hold it against them.
