MCU’s ‘Ghost Rider’ Rumors Intensify as Rosamund Pike Reportedly Eyes Key Role
Marvel’s ‘Ghost Rider’ movie has just begun to take shape, yet it’s already sparking the kind of speculation typically reserved for projects well into production. The announcement of Ryan Gosling as the flame-skulled antihero was a significant surprise from Marvel’s recent slate reveals, and since then, fans have been eager for any details about additional cast members. With no official casting beyond Gosling confirmed, the rumor mill has kicked into high gear.
This week, the speculation took an intriguing turn with reports suggesting that the film may be on the lookout for its female lead.
According to Jeff Sneider’s InSneider newsletter, Rosamund Pike is reportedly the leading candidate to portray Johnny Blaze’s love interest in Shawn Levy’s ‘Ghost Rider.’ Sneider noted that Pike, at 47, is a fitting choice alongside Gosling, who is 45.
It’s important to highlight that ‘Ghost Rider’ is not currently in active casting, and Sneider’s report suggests the project is lower on Marvel’s priority list. Nevertheless, the news has already generated considerable excitement, especially since it would reunite Pike with her ‘Ladies First’ co-star Sacha Baron Cohen, who is also expected to reprise his role as Mephisto from the ‘Ironheart’ series in ‘Ghost Rider.’
In addition to the potential casting, Sneider’s report provides insights into where Gosling’s Spirit of Vengeance fits within Marvel’s larger plans. According to the InSneider newsletter, Gosling’s Ghost Rider is anticipated to make his first MCU appearance in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ in 2027 before leading his own solo film, which is tentatively scheduled for release in either May or July of 2028.
Sneider also confirmed that Gosling will portray Johnny Blaze and will be the sole version of Ghost Rider in the film, rather than sharing the role with Danny Ketch.
This clarification addresses a lingering question since Gosling’s casting was first announced, as Marvel Studios had not specified which iteration of the character he would embody. Regarding the film’s antagonist, Sneider did not mention a confirmed villain, but Blackheart, Mephisto’s son from the comics and the 2007 ‘Ghost Rider’ movie, remains a likely candidate if the new film follows a similar path.
There are also rumors that Marvel intends to incorporate Nightcrawler into ‘Ghost Rider’ in some way, potentially using the film to set the stage for other X-Men characters ahead of a future team-up movie. None of these elements have been officially confirmed by Marvel Studios, and given the early stage of development, many details could still evolve before casting decisions are finalized.
For now, the prospect of Pike entering Johnny Blaze’s world gives fans something tangible to hold onto while awaiting more official announcements. Her pairing with Gosling would bring together two talented, similarly aged leads to a franchise that has struggled to find its footing on the big screen since Nicolas Cage’s earlier portrayals of the character. Whether their chemistry can replicate the successful dynamic Pike shared with Baron Cohen in their previous collaboration remains to be seen.
