MGM+ Confirms ‘Godfather of Harlem’ Season 5 Will Not Happen
MGM+ has announced the future of ‘Godfather of Harlem’, and it’s not what fans anticipated. According to the official statement from MGM+, the series will not return for a fifth season in the traditional format. Instead, the story will conclude with a two-hour finale that will wrap up the entire crime drama.
‘Godfather of Harlem’ first premiered in 2019 on Epix, now known as MGM+. The show features Forest Whitaker portraying a fictional version of real-life Harlem gangster Bumpy Johnson. Over four seasons, the series has built a solid reputation, earning critical acclaim with a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Created by Chris Brancato and Paul Eckstein, known for their work on ‘Narcos’, the series blends crime storytelling with real historical figures from the 1960s, including Malcolm X, played by Nigél Thatch, and Adam Clayton Powell Jr., portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito.
Rather than continuing into Season 5, MGM+ has opted to conclude the narrative with a special two-hour episode event. Filming for the series finale is set to commence in New York later this month. The announcement confirms that Forest Whitaker will reprise his role as both the lead actor and an executive producer for this final chapter. Other returning cast members include Ilfenesh Hadera, Antoinette Crowe-Legacy, Erik LaRay Harvey, and Rome Flynn.
The network also indicated that additional guest stars will be revealed later, hinting at new appearances to help wrap up the story.
MGM+ shared a brief description of what fans can expect from the conclusion. The final story will center on Bumpy Johnson as he faces immense pressure from all sides while his criminal empire begins to crumble. He will have to confront adversaries from the criminal underworld, political forces, and personal conflicts simultaneously.
The official statement described the finale as, “Bumpy Johnson faces the ultimate reckoning as the walls close in around his empire. With enemies converging from every direction—political, criminal, and personal—Bumpy must draw on every alliance, every sacrifice, and every hard lesson earned across five seasons to protect what he has built and the people he loves.”

The statement further explained that the final two hours will depict Bumpy reflecting on his life and the legacy he leaves behind after rising from the streets of Harlem to a position of power during a tumultuous era.
Forest Whitaker also shared his thoughts on the series’ conclusion, stating that playing Bumpy Johnson has been a significant part of his career and a deeply meaningful role. He noted that the character allowed him to explore themes of ambition, loyalty, and survival all at once.
MGM+ executive Michael Wright praised Whitaker’s performance, calling it a key element of the show’s success. He referred to Whitaker’s work as a standout achievement and described ‘Godfather of Harlem’ as an important series in the network’s lineup of original shows.
The series has also been recognized for featuring notable actors in supporting or recurring roles. Over the years, the cast has included names like Paul Sorvino, Tramell Tillman, Method Man, and Whoopi Goldberg, blending fictional storytelling with historical influence.
As ‘Godfather of Harlem’ approaches its conclusion, MGM+ will continue to focus on its remaining and upcoming projects. The network currently has several active shows and more in development, expanding its original programming slate.
For fans of the series, the upcoming two-hour finale will mark the final chapter in Bumpy Johnson’s story, concluding a crime drama that has run for four seasons and made a significant impact on modern television storytelling.
