Michael Bay Developing Film ‘Operation Epic Fury’ About U.S. Rescue Mission in Iran
Michael Bay is gearing up to make a return to high-octane action filmmaking with a new project centered on a real-life U.S. rescue mission in Iran, as confirmed by Universal Pictures on Wednesday.
The film, titled Operation Epic Fury, will be directed by Bay and will depict the rescue of two American pilots who were shot down during the April 2026 conflict in Iran. This incident unfolded amid a significant military operation involving the United States, detailing the efforts to recover the pilots after their F-15E Strike Eagle was downed over the Zagros Mountains.
Based on an upcoming book by Mitchell Zuckoff, set to be published in 2027 by HarperCollins, the story portrays the rescue mission as one of the most intricate and extensive recovery efforts in U.S. military history.
Universal Pictures has stated that the film is being developed as a true-story action feature. The operation, known in reports as Operation Epic Fury, is characterized by its perilous conditions in rugged terrain, where teams worked diligently to extract the downed pilots following the crash.
This project reunites Bay with several of his long-time collaborators. Mitchell Zuckoff previously authored 13 Hours, which Bay adapted into 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. This connection indicates a return to the military-themed storytelling that Bay has successfully executed in the past.
Bay is also reuniting with producers Erwin Stoff and Scott Gardenhour, both of whom collaborated with him on 13 Hours. Gardenhour has also been involved in earlier Bay films like Armageddon and Pain & Gain. Together, they will produce Operation Epic Fury.
The announcement comes after a relatively quiet period for Bay in terms of narrative feature films. His last theatrical release was Ambulance in 2022, a fast-paced action thriller centered around a bank heist and ambulance chase in Los Angeles. Since then, Bay has primarily focused on documentary projects, including We Are Storror, released in 2025, which followed a group of British parkour athletes.
As of now, Universal Pictures has not disclosed a release date for Operation Epic Fury, nor have any casting details been announced.
The film is anticipated to continue Bay’s tradition of delivering large-scale action, military tension, and events inspired by real-world occurrences, similar to his previous works based on true operations and high-stakes missions.
