Michael Douglas Reveals Kobe Bryant’s Creative Excuse to Visit Catherine Zeta-Jones
Few Hollywood romances have been recounted as frequently as that of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Their story features a bold pick-up line, a 25-year age difference, and a shared birthday. Now, Douglas has shared new insights from the late 1990s in his memoir, ‘One Helluva Ride’.
The couple first crossed paths at the Deauville Film Festival in August 1998, following Douglas’s viewing of her breakout film ‘The Mask of Zorro’. They began dating in March 1999 and got engaged on New Year’s Eve in Aspen, eventually tying the knot in November 2000.
During this glamorous period in Los Angeles, Zeta-Jones was settling into her neighborhood, which Douglas notes had a very famous resident. He writes that her home in Pacific Palisades was situated directly below that of Kobe Bryant.
Douglas claims the Lakers superstar frequently found reasons to visit Zeta-Jones’ house “a lot” in the late 1990s. He humorously suggests he’s unsure how many times Bryant’s dog went missing, implying that the dog served as a convenient excuse for his visits. This playful remark comes from a man who was romantically involved with her at the time.
The timing of these visits adds an intriguing layer. Bryant had not yet met Vanessa Laine, who would become his wife in 2001. At the time, he was also nine years younger than Zeta-Jones, while Douglas is 25 years her senior.
The timelines overlap significantly. Douglas and Zeta-Jones got engaged on New Year’s Eve in 1999, while Bryant proposed to Laine just five months later, in May 2000.
This isn’t the first time the neighborly connection has been mentioned. After Bryant’s passing, Zeta-Jones shared an Instagram tribute, recalling him as her next-door neighbor in Pacific Palisades. She reflected on their first encounter 24 years ago when they were both young and ambitious.
She recounted meeting him the day he moved in, as his dog wandered into her garden. In her tribute, she also mentioned that his basketball court was her view, allowing her to witness his talent and dedication without knowing the greatness he would achieve.
Zeta-Jones even highlighted the coincidence of the number 24, which was also Bryant’s jersey number for the Lakers. Her version of events paints a warm picture of a friendly neighborly bond, while Douglas adds a more mischievous twist to the same dog story.
In his memoir, Douglas revisits how he fell for Zeta-Jones, recalling her intelligence, humor, and confidence. After a dinner date, he boldly told her in the hotel elevator that he intended to father her children, insisting it wasn’t just a line but the truth.
That candidness proved to be prophetic, as the couple welcomed their son Dylan in August 2000 and their daughter Carys in April 2003. Zeta-Jones later won an Oscar for ‘Chicago’, and the pair has continued to make appearances together at awards shows and premieres.
Douglas also emphasizes that their bond transcends mere attraction, describing it as a profound connection based on mutual respect. This sentiment provides context to the Kobe anecdote, which feels less like a warning about a rival and more like a cherished, humorous memory from a relationship that has clearly thrived.
The detail about Bryant is likely to become one of the most discussed aspects of the memoir, intertwining basketball royalty with a Hollywood power couple and a dog with impeccable timing.
