Michael Jackson Boosts Sony Music Sales Despite Slow Quarter for Sony Pictures
Sony has unveiled its financial results for the first quarter of the 2026 fiscal year, revealing a surprising success story. According to the company’s latest earnings report, Michael Jackson’s music significantly contributed to a major boost for Sony Music during the quarter, even as Sony Pictures faced a notably slower period at the box office.
Sony Music reported sales of 557.9 billion yen, approximately $3.5 billion, for the three months ending in June. This represents a 22 percent increase compared to the same timeframe last year. The company noted that Michael Jackson’s iconic albums ‘Thriller’ and ‘Bad’ ranked among its 10 best-selling recorded music projects during this quarter.
This impressive performance coincided with the release of ‘Michael’, the new biographical film about the legendary singer by Lionsgate. While Sony did not explicitly attribute the sales increase to the film, the timing suggests that it may have reignited interest in Jackson’s music. Fans, both old and new, have been revisiting his extensive catalog, resulting in higher music sales during this period.
Jackson remains one of the most significant artists in music history, with albums like ‘Thriller’ and ‘Bad’ continuing to sell well decades after their initial release. The renewed interest surrounding ‘Michael’ seems to have added another chapter to his enduring legacy.
While Sony Music celebrated a robust quarter, Sony Pictures experienced a quieter few months. According to Sony’s earnings report, the studio released only one major theatrical film in North America during this quarter, Nate Bargatze’s comedy ‘The Breadwinner’. Consequently, the film division generated less revenue than in the same period last year.

Sony Pictures reported revenue of $1.98 billion, reflecting a 13 percent decline compared to the previous year. Despite lower revenue, the studio’s operating income increased by 21 percent to $156 million, indicating that the business remained profitable even with fewer theatrical releases.
The company’s theatrical revenue reached $30 million during the quarter, which was about $100 million lower than the same period in 2025, when Sony released ’28 Years Later’ and ‘Karate Kid: Legends’. These films provided the studio with a much stronger theatrical lineup than it had this year.
Sony’s television division also saw a decline, with revenue dropping from $841 million during the same quarter last year to $571 million this year. The earnings report indicated that this decrease was due to fewer television series being delivered during the period, despite the final season of ‘The Boys’ premiering on Prime Video.
Overall, Sony’s latest earnings reveal two contrasting narratives within the company. Its music division thrived, bolstered in part by renewed interest in Michael Jackson’s legendary catalog. Meanwhile, its film and television segments experienced slower activity due to a lighter release schedule.
These results underscore the ongoing value of Sony’s music library. Even years after his passing, Michael Jackson’s music continues to be a significant commercial force, and the release of ‘Michael’ seems to have encouraged many listeners to revisit some of his most celebrated albums.
