‘Minions & Monsters’ Digital Release Date Announced
Animated sequels often follow a predictable pattern: a theatrical release, steady weekly earnings, and then a transition to digital platforms as the theatrical window closes. ‘Minions & Monsters’ has adhered to this trend since its debut on July 1, although its box office journey has been anything but typical.
The seventh installment in the Despicable Me franchise is gearing up for its next phase, with reports indicating that the film will be available on digital and VOD platforms starting August 11, as revealed by a release date on Apple TV. While Universal has yet to officially confirm this date, it’s important to note that unverified digital release timelines are subject to change.
This home release comes amidst an unusually challenging box office performance. ‘Minions & Monsters’ has surpassed $400 million globally, a figure that seems impressive but actually marks the lowest overall performance of any film in the Despicable Me and Minions franchise to date.
The film’s domestic struggles were particularly evident, with a five-day holiday debut of just $61.4 million, the weakest opening in franchise history and about half of what 2022’s ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ achieved under similar conditions. Box office analyst David A. Gross commented on the film’s underperformance due to audience fatigue, stating in remarks to Variety that reaching seven installments is unprecedented for animated series, leading to signs of fatigue among viewers.
In contrast, the film’s international performance has been much stronger. Audiences outside the U.S. have consistently outperformed domestic viewers, with countries like China, Germany, Mexico, and the United Kingdom contributing significantly to the film’s worldwide total, even as North American numbers fell short of expectations.

Despite this international success, ‘Minions & Monsters’ still lags behind its predecessors, which typically grossed between $900 million and over $1 billion worldwide. Competing films, such as ‘Toy Story 5’ and Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ have also impacted its theatrical availability.
On a positive note for Universal and Illumination, the film was produced for a relatively modest budget of $85 million, significantly lower than the approximately $100 million budgets of recent franchise entries. ‘Minions & Monsters’ reached its estimated break-even point weeks ago and has been profitable since, regardless of how its final earnings compare to earlier films.
Critical reception has also been a bright spot for the film, which boasts a franchise-best score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A-minus grade in CinemaScore exit polling. This suggests that audience satisfaction among those who attended has not been the issue behind the softer box office numbers.
As ‘Minions & Monsters’ approaches its home release, the film’s legacy within the franchise appears to be a unique blend of records: it stands as the lowest-grossing installment by a significant margin while still being a comfortably profitable venture.
