Monica Barbaro Shines at ‘One Night Only’ Premiere and Shares Character Insights
Romantic comedies are experiencing a resurgence, with filmmakers demonstrating that the genre still has vitality when paired with innovative concepts. This week’s New York premiere circuit has been particularly vibrant, attracting a star-studded guest list eager to celebrate the latest addition to this revival.
The film in focus comes from a director known for his successful track record in the genre and is already creating buzz for its unique premise and the leading lady’s dedication to her role. Ahead of its release later this week, the cast gathered for a glamorous evening, offering fans their first extensive look at the film’s stars together.
Monica Barbaro turned heads at the ‘One Night Only’ New York premiere, which took place on Monday night at the SVA Theater. The Oscar-nominated actress dazzled in a flowing white gown adorned with a pale yellow and blue floral shoulder detail, joining a star-studded guest list that included Dua Lipa, Callum Turner, Julia Fox, Molly Ringwald, Este Haim, Ziwe, King Princess, and director Will Gluck.
In the film, Barbaro plays Allie, a hopeful romantic navigating an unconventional dating landscape alongside Turner’s character, Owen, a recently heartbroken pizza shop owner. The film’s premise involves their chance encounter in a slightly fictionalized New York City on the one night each year when single people are allowed to engage in romantic encounters, a high-concept twist that has drawn comparisons to other single-night thrillers, though this film leans more toward romance than chaos.
Barbaro candidly discussed the film’s unusual setup in a recent interview, stating, “The premise of it is so crazy, but as soon as you watch it, it’s a beautiful rom-com,” in conversation with Where Is The Buzz.
Turner echoed this sentiment, explaining that the chemistry between Allie and Owen works because neither is initially seeking romance. “They’re not after each other, so there’s a freedom,” he shared with Rotten Tomatoes. “They’re not looking at each other thinking, ‘This is the person.’ They’re actually on different quests.”
Barbaro went above and beyond the typical expectations of a rom-com lead, taking on singing and piano performance for a key scene where her character serenades an audience. She described the sequence as “a very scary thing,” while acknowledging her tendency to embrace challenges.
Director Will Gluck, known for romantic comedy hits like ‘Easy A’ and ‘Anyone But You,’ infused the project with his signature blend of humor and visual storytelling, incorporating intricate details throughout New York City’s backdrop to enhance the film’s texture. The supporting cast includes Maya Hawke, LeVar Burton, Ziwe, King Princess, Ben Marshall, and Nicholas Braun.
With the film set to hit theaters on August 7, Barbaro and Turner are actively promoting it, including scheduled appearances on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.’ As the genre strives for relevance, ‘One Night Only’ aims to demonstrate that a clever premise and authentic chemistry can still draw audiences.
