‘NCIS: Origins’ Season 3 Episode 3 Recap & Ending Explained Tony’s Clue Points to a Second Target Inside NCIS
Some reunions are truly worth the wait, and fans of the ‘NCIS‘ franchise have been eagerly anticipating this one for weeks. Mark Harmon’s Gibbs and Michael Weatherly’s Tony DiNozzo finally shared a scene again, and the episode was filled with surprises beyond just their heartfelt reunion. This recap of ‘NCIS: Origins’ and the ending explained covers the key events and their significance.
The episode, titled ‘Return of the Mack’, aired on Tuesday, October 20, at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. Written by Nichole Millard and directed by James Whitmore Jr., it cleverly weaved together two timelines. In 1992, a young Gibbs and the team investigated a murder alongside a young Ducky, played by Adam Campbell, while in the present, a wounded Gibbs sought answers.
After being shot in the season premiere, Gibbs makes his way to NCIS headquarters in Washington, D.C., to seek assistance from Tony, who is now the agency’s director. Earlier in the season, Woody had reconstructed a fingerprint, but the profile was mired in bureaucracy, prompting Gibbs to reach out to someone with real access. The two share bourbon, toast the late Leon Vance, and catch up on a decade of silence.
Tony insists that Jimmy check on Gibbs, but Gibbs declines, as he is supposed to be dead. He also places a photo of himself, Tony, and Ducky on the desk, a touching tribute to the late David McCallum’s character that was not scripted. This small gesture carries significant emotional weight.
The final scene transitions to the morgue, where Tony delivers a decent impression of Ducky, and both men express how much they miss him. Tony then hands Gibbs the file on the individual whose fingerprint was discovered on Gibbs’ neck. This person had previously worked for the CIA, but Tony doubts he was the shooter, believing instead that the actual gunman hired him to track Gibbs down.
Then comes the more significant clue. NCIS’ system was hacked a few weeks prior, allowing the intruder to access every personnel file from the ’90s. Gibbs recalls his own rule about coincidences, leading to the implication that the gunman may be targeting more than one individual.
Showrunner David J. North confirmed this theory in an interview with TV Insider, stating that the second target is someone connected to NIS or NCIS. He also mentioned that Gibbs and Tony will not appear together again on ‘NCIS: Origins’ this season, although Tony has helped advance the mystery.

Tony tells Gibbs he can’t handle this alone, and Gibbs commends the team in the building, expressing his pride in Tony. The moment when Tony finally calls him “boss” at the end is a deliberate choice by North, emphasizing character growth for Tony and hinting at a call to Ellie Bishop.
This development is crucial because Bleeding Cool’s preview of the next episode, ‘Shimmy Shimmy Ya’, indicates that Gibbs returns to a location filled with memories and finds he is not alone. Additionally, TV Fanatic has reported that Emily Wickersham’s Bishop is set to join the prequel. It appears that Tony’s efforts are already yielding results.

In the past timeline, the team discovers Marine Lance Corporal Marco Diaz on a beach, seemingly a victim of a cliff fall. Ducky quickly determines it’s a murder, with torture marks and branding indicating something more sinister. A notebook filled with women’s names and dollar amounts, along with cash hidden in his barracks, reveals he was involved in a gigolo side job.
Gibbs goes undercover, with Ducky coaching him like Cyrano, which culminates in a brawl with the jealous husband of a client named Mona. The husband is cleared, and the real killer turns out to be Marco’s girlfriend, Staff Sergeant Combs, who was envious of his side job. Marco had been sending money to his mother and sisters.
The episode was rich with humor. Ducky’s mother, Victoria, inadvertently found the murder weapon while wandering the crime scene, and Franks finally asked Swanson out, only for her to insist on picking him up. Gibbs and Lala also shared a charged moment, but he respected her request for time.
The episode concludes with Gibbs and Ducky heading to lunch, as the voiceover praises Ducky as the best friend a guy could ask for. North informed TV Insider that Ducky won’t appear again this season but will be referenced frequently.
