Prime Video has been steadily cultivating one of streaming’s most dependable action franchises, primarily centered around Alan Ritchson’s portrayal of Lee Child’s iconic character. What began as a simple adaptation has evolved into a much larger narrative, with the platform clearly aiming to broaden the universe beyond its original protagonist.

This expansion reached a significant milestone recently, coinciding with the conclusion of one series and the full-season launch of another. Fans wrapping up the latest chapter of the franchise’s flagship show barely had time to catch their breath before Amazon presented them with a new binge-worthy option.

‘Reacher‘ Season 4 concluded its run on the same day ‘Neagley,’ the franchise’s inaugural spin-off, released all eight episodes simultaneously. Within days, both shows found themselves at the pinnacle of Prime Video’s charts, with ‘Neagley’ officially surpassing ‘Reacher’ for the top spot on the platform.

According to FlixPatrol’s global rankings, ‘Neagley’ secured the top position following its September 16 premiere, with ‘Reacher’ quickly falling to second place. Specifically, on Prime Video’s U.S. Top 10 list, ‘Neagley’ ranked first as of September 20, with ‘Reacher’ trailing closely behind.

‘Neagley’ features Maria Sten reprising her role as Frances Neagley, a former member of the Army’s 110th Special Investigations Unit and one of Jack Reacher’s closest allies from the original series. In this spin-off, Neagley operates as a private investigator in Chicago, becoming embroiled in a perilous conspiracy following the suspicious death of an old friend.

In contrast to ‘Reacher,’ which follows its titular character as he moves from one location to another, ‘Neagley’ is set in a consistent, recurring environment, offering a different pace and structure compared to its parent series. Ritchson makes a guest appearance as Jack Reacher in the spin-off, providing a direct link between the two shows while allowing Sten’s character to take center stage.

Created by Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton, the series’ release strategy has undoubtedly contributed to its rapid rise in the charts. Instead of the traditional weekly episode rollout seen with ‘Reacher,’ ‘Neagley’ was launched with all eight episodes available for immediate streaming, allowing fans to binge the entire story at once.

Beyond the streaming metrics, ‘Neagley’ has also garnered critical acclaim, standing strong against its more established predecessor. The spin-off currently boasts a critics’ score ranging from 92% to 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, depending on the source, while ‘Reacher’ Season 4 maintains a score in the mid-90s, placing both shows in close proximity in terms of critical reception.

Audience reactions have mirrored this trend, with ‘Neagley’ receiving positive feedback from viewers who have praised Sten’s performance and the show’s more grounded, character-driven approach compared to the larger-than-life style of its parent series. This reception has quickly established ‘Neagley’ as more than just a supplementary spin-off riding on the coattails of its predecessor.

‘Reacher’ Season 5 has already been confirmed, ensuring that Ritchson’s portrayal of the character will continue into the future. While ‘Neagley’ has yet to receive an official renewal for a second season, Wootton has indicated that the creative team has already outlined future storylines.

Given the strong performance of the spin-off both critically and in streaming charts during its initial weeks, a renewal seems more like a formality than a genuine uncertainty. With Prime Video clearly willing to invest in expanding this universe beyond its original central character, ‘Neagley’ surpassing ‘Reacher’ may be remembered as the moment the franchise officially evolved into a full-fledged universe.
